Amphibians: Frog and Toad
Tomato Frog
Dyscophus Antongilii
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Amphibia
Order: Anura
Family: Microhylidae
Genus: Dyscophusa
Appearance:
The Tomato Frog must get it's name from being small, plump, round and red. It size is around 4 inches. The colors of the frog may vary from dull red to orange or even yellow.
Adaptations:
When threatened, this frog puffs up it's body to seem more threatening then it is. Also, if captured by it's enemy, the Tomato Frog will secrete a sticky, whitish substance causing the predators mouth to become gummy, thus, releasing the frog. This frog's toxin can also cause allergic reactions in humans.
Surinam Toad
Pipa pipa
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Amphibia
Order: Anura
Superorder: Batrachia
Family: Pipidae
Genus: Pipa
Appearance:
This weird Toad is oddly shaped. Its skin is very dull and brown and it often gives the Toad an appearance of being dead. Pipa pipa is an aquatic Toad. Another name for the Surinam Toad is the "Star Fingered Toad" because of its broadly webbed fingers. This creature lies very flat to the ground adding to its deceased appearance.
Adaptations:
While laying flat on the ground the Pipa pipa can easily hide from predators especially if it blends into its surroundings. The Surinam Toad almost always looks like a dead leaf or a flat rock or something other than itself. This is useful for evading predators.
