Review of Sentry Natural Defense Flea Control for Cats

Updated on May 3, 2012

Treating Fleas in Cats

Often, cats do not show any signs of flea infestation. However, it is important to take effective steps for flea control in cats because they may eat them while grooming and get sick. Fleas may also cause infectious diseases and since they feed on blood, kittens may feel weak and even die. While there are many cat flea control products available on the market, Sentry Natural Defense Flea Control for Cats is one of the few that uses natural ingredients in its products.

So, what is Sentry Natural Defense all about and what products does it offer for treating fleas in cats? We will have a look at these flea control products for cats but first let's look at the ingredients in these products and how they control these pests.

How Do Sentry Natural Defense Products Work?

According to Sergeant's Pet Care Products, the people behind these flea control products, some plants have their own defense mechanisms which help them fight against harmful insects. Compounds from such plants were tested and the most effective were combined to create these natural medications.

The main ingredients used in these products are peppermint oil, cinnamon oil, lemongrass oil, clove oil and thyme oil.

The company claims that Sentry Natural Defense blocks a neurotransmitter present in fleas and ticks called octopamine. This causes the central nervous system of the fleas to breakdown and kills them instantly.

If used as directed, these products are safe for cats and young children since octopamine is not found in human and other mammals.

Let's have a look at some of the Sentry Natural Defense Flea Control products for cats.

Sentry Natural Defense Natural Flea and Tick Spray and Powder for Cats & Kittens

The natural flea control spray for cats keeps the fleas, ticks and mosquitoes away for up to four weeks. The product is veterinarian tested and available in a pump spray which makes it easy to apply on your pet.

This cat flea control product should be applied by keeping the nozzle 8" to 12" from the pet. You should start from the tail and the entire body of the pet should be sprayed with this natural flea control spray.

The flea control powder is available in a bottle with a shaker cap which makes it easy to apply.

Sentry Natural Defense Natural Flea and Tick Squeeze-On for Cats & Kittens

This squeeze-on topical solution for cat flea control contains peppermint oil, clove oil and lemongrass oil. It gives your pet four weeks of protection from fleas, ticks and also mosquitoes.

Your cat can easily bathe and swim after application. Just avoid bathing your pet for 24 hours after the application.

The contents of one whole tube should be squeezed out and applied starting from the back of your cat's neck to the front of the shoulder blades.

Sentry Natural Defense Natural Flea Shampoo for Cats & Kittens

This is a natural shampoo for treating fleas and ticks in cats. It can be safely used in kittens more than 8 weeks old.

You need to wet the cat's coat thoroughly and then use the shampoo to work up a lather making sure that it reaches the skin of your pet. The lather should be allowed to stand for five minutes before washing it off.

Sentry Natural Defense Natural Flea & Tick Carpet Powder

You can choose to make this natural carpet powder as a regular part of the flea control routine for your cat. The powder kills fleas and ticks on contact and is also effective against cockroaches and silverfish.

The flea control powder is applied uniformly in and around the areas which need to be disinfected. It is recommended to use the product every two weeks to prevent re-infestation. The 10 oz container contains enough powder to cover up to 2,000 square feet or three to five rooms.

Precautions and Drawbacks of Sentry Natural Defense Flea Control Products for Cats

The Sentry Natural Flea Control Products should not be used with kittens under the age of 12 weeks and should not be applied on the eyes or mouth of your cat.

Although the company claims that the products are completely safe, there may be some side-effects such as skin irritation, hair loss, and hair discoloration at the site of the application. It is advisable to test the product by initially using only a few drops. If there are no side-effects for 24 hours, use the full application. If you do notice adverse reactions, wash the area with a detergent that can help remove the oils from the cat's body.

These products do not give quick results compared to the other popular brands, which act quickly and kill fleas even within six hours. Most of the other cat flea products require a once a month dose whereas Sentry Natural Defense cat flea control products may require application every two weeks and your cat may still not be free of these pests.

If you are someone who does not want to expose your cat to harmful and strong chemicals used in other flea control products such as Frontline or Advantage, Sentry Natural Defense Flea Control for Cats products are indeed ideal for you. Although these products may have side-effects (this is why it is important to do a patch test on your cat), these may not be as bad as the other chemical-laden products for cats.
