Beautiful Seahorses in an Aquarium

Mermaids Ride this Type of Horse

Each time you see a seahorse you might find yourself looking for the tiny mermaid carrying a bit and bridal. Some are actually surprised to see that sea horses are real and thought that they were the stuff of imagination.

These tiny fish don’t seem like real fish because they move slowly and use their tails to hang on to sea weed and other objects to keep them from floating away in the current.

These small horses can be found in most warm oceans and can be anywhere in size ranging from an inch to a foot long depending on where they are found.

They also can change their color depending on their environment so you might try different decorations to get your sea ponies to become more colorful.

More about this Fascinating Creature

Seahorses turn things backwards in that the male becomes pregnant. The female actually produces the eggs but then places them in a special pouch that the male has. She seems lazy to me. He then carries them around for up to 45 days before the fully formed babies come out and strike out on their own. At that point the males work is done and he is free to go.

Learn as much as you can before buying any of these cute ponies for your saltwater aquarium. You don’t want to discover that you bought them before you are completely ready. They can die easy so research has to be done first to be successful.

Some will go out and catch them for themselves and then are surprised that they do not do as well as ones bred in captivity. Wild ones can stress out and die before they get a chance to get used to their new environment.

Keeping Your Seahorses Healthy

It can be nice to have some other fish in your tank with your ponies, but these added fish may pick on them so keep them alone or choose any other fish wisely. Another thing to consider is that sea horses eat slowly and having other fish around may cause them to starve as the other fish quickly grab up the food. Just some shrimp and some small fish that stay on the bottom of the tank would probably be best.

Seahorses usually don’t chase after prey but wait hold still and wait for the prey to come to them.

Another type of sea pony is the sea dragon. These are similar but look more like live seaweed then a fish and can hide so well that one would not notice them until they moved. These are harder to care for so don’t be temped to get one of these until you do well with other kinds of seahorses. There is a picture of one of these below.

Seahorses for Sale

All the photos on this page show seahorses in a aquarium and not in the wild. So they can be kept and will do nicely in captivity. But don’t jump the gun and buy any of these unique pets before you have properly researched on how to keep them healthy.

When you check out any pet store it is rare that you find sea horses for sale there. So this tells me that it is challenging. However, many keep them and sell them on line. You can do the same if you do enough study on their care before you buy.

The video below shows where you can get them on line and they come in different sizes. Regular and dwarf are the most common. The sea dragon (right below) is really unique. They have leafy limbs, which help them hide from their enemies. You can sometimes find these for sale, but don’t start with this one until you have successfully raised the more common ones. They are expensive and you have to have the expertise before investing in them.

More Sea Horse Care

Other fish may pick on your sea horse pets so keep them in a tank of their own. If you have never kept these unique pets before, start with the dwarf sizes. These are less expensive and more hardy and you can get around 10 of them with $100.00.

Feed them live tiny shrimp that you can raise yourself in another tank. You can also get dried and frozen but this will increase the risk that your water will get foul. Try different methods and see what works best for you.

Invest in a good book or check Youtube videos that will give you the best information on how to keep them before ordering any and have your tank all set up several days before your new pets arrive to insure that your tank is ready.
