Cat Care Tips - How To Keep Your Cat Happy

Updated on November 8, 2015

Cat Care Tips - Written by a Cat!

What do cats like? How do you best care for your cat? Dogs have owners but cats have staff! So goes the saying, just ask your cat, but in my experience of Furless Ones, they don't take the job seriously! They don't know what cats like! Persian kittens do! As responsible representatives of felinity, we consider it our duty to let you know.

So, what is good for Persian kittens? What is most important in cat health care and well being? Nevermind obsessing about domestic cat behavior - this is a good natured Meow to give the Fish Heads up about how we should be properly treated. This article is intended to let you know what cats like. Many cats experience staff who are less than perfect - some are a nightmare - but we think they could do better if educated. Cats are prepared to give you a chance! Please do remember in all your dealings with us this one simple fact. In Ancient Egypt we were worshipped as Gods and Goddesses. You might have forgotten this, but we haven't. Our rightful place is center stage in your lives. Our rightful deserts are warmth, food and Love, Love, Love....

We ARE Divinity after all....

What cats think - Don't put the cat out at night!

Cat Care Tips - Care for your cat indoors

Should you put the cat out at night? Do you remember Fred Flintstone? Of course I don't, even as an older cat, but my mummy does! At the end of each programme Fred would put out the cat, Wilma would let it back in and the resulting shouts would wake all Bedrock?

This is one of those perennial cat questions, isn't it.... Well, have I news for you! There you go, understanding your cat is important you say, but we cats are NOT actually nocturnal. We like to prowl in the twilight hours, but leave us out ALL NIGHT? Are you CRAZY! There are drunks and villains and foxes in England. In the US they have snakes and bears and raccoons and mountain lions....

Don't you care that we might get cold, or cat-napped for our fur or catch rabies, or get run over by a drunk driver, or eaten by something big and fierce???

Please at least give us a cat flap - and if we are delicate (like Persians) keep us in. There is plenty to do inside, roll in cat nip for instance, or indulge in a cat tree manicure.... Toys and cat grass and litter boxes will furnish what the Great Outside does, thank you very much!

What Cats Like - Seeing Cats As Divinity - God and Goddess Cats

Cats for pets? Don't you know YOU are the pets? We cats are divine. Here you can see and buy divine cats - or better still buy luxuries items for cats....

What Cats Eat - Feeding your cat properly.

What Is This Mush? Cat Food versus People Food!

Look, you guys get to eat real food. We get kibble which is OK if you want a balanced good for you kind of diet I suppose - but you buy the cheap stuff. That's like feeding your kids the economy burgers at Greasy Joe's each night, then wondering why they get spots now and heart attacks in their thirties!

The right food is a key part of cats health care. Guys, you KNOW you get what you pay for. If food is cheap it ain't real food, see???

High on the list of cats problems is food. The canned stuff in particular. You go buying big cans to save money and putting it in the fridge. Do you like three day old leftovers that are all cold and dried out? I thought not. No wonder cats vomiting is legendary!

We like little pouches, premium with gravy or jelly. Anyone observing feline behaviour could tell you this! Then we can lick the gravy and come back to the chunks later if we are not in the mood for chicken flavoured kibble. And while we are on food please don't leave it down next day. It's dry and flies have been on it!

Of course the most savvy Furless Ones will feed us a breed specific luxury kibble and vary it with home cooked chicken breast or even a soupcon of white fish, maybe a teensy piece of cheese for a treat??? Please???

The Place to order Premium Cat Food - Things cats like - buy premium cat food

Buy the best kibble money can buy - and yes, we do like eating the best kibble!

Our standby kibble for many years now. Specially formulated for persian tummies!

What Cats Eat - Is milk bad for cats?

Cats love cream, but may not tolerate milk well

Things cats like are not always good for them. Milk and cream - oh yes, how we love them! But guess what? Our little furry tummies aren't designed for cows milk! Too much lactose you see, and if we are lactose intolerant (as many cats are) we get a dose of the screamers! As outdoor kitties, our discomfort goes unnoticed, as indoor kitties it becomes yours....

The remedy?

Don't give us milk, provide us with fresh clean water, change it regularly, and if you do want to give us a milky treat, buy special cat milk or just give us the tiniest lick of cream. (Like you, too much cream is bad for our hearts!)

Cats like to exercise claws

Providing furniture for cats to scratch

We have claws for a reason and it is a reason you might not find compatible with your furniture. The answer? Give us furniture of our own! We love to climb and to sharpen our toenails - what better than a cat tower that allows us to do both?

There are lots of play centers on the market and some are really neat. My mummy even built her own 20 years ago and generations of happy cats have loved it!

Now, if we still scratch the furniture you have to ask what is more important to you, us or the furniture! If you are a good person you will tolerate our little foibles and even enjoy our artwork and sculpture.

I have not the words on a G rated lens for people who buy new furniture and dump old cats. I hesitate to even hiss what I think about the misguided "Owners" and Vets who amputate our toes and cause us a lifetime of agony and helplessness....

Theirs will be a level of well-deserved wretchedness even Dante could not describe....

A good quality cat tower is so important to keep us amused.

Using the Litterbox - What Cats Are Really Thinking...

Cats Potty Problems

Well, personally, I never suffered from these - far too Divine of course - but if we do, there are solutions which are kind. These kinder solutions involve observing and understanding out purrrrsonalities. My mummy wrote a whole page about toilet troubles. Why not check it out?

This is the cat litter we instructed mummy to get for us. It is fast clumping, sweet smelling and flushable so our house is never stinky!

Cats with Fleas. Weebees???? Eeeeek!!!

Flea Control Products - Feline

Oh my, how I shudder to think of little black specks in my lovely white fur! How could you let it get to this? My ears are raw from scratching, I have psoriasis and bald patches, I am anaemic.... HELP!

WHEW!!! It was just a nightmare, thank God. Well, even as an indoor kitty I have to have flea treatment you know and in August an outdoor kitty could suffer all the above things - AND ticks... The solution, ask your vet for a suitable spot on treatment like Advantage or Stronghold.

Flea collars do NOT work by the way, they irritate the skin and send the bugs down South, but spot on treatments keep us happy and the better prescription ones also protect us from round worms and heart worms.

You want a happy cat? Well, if you start with a healthy cat and give us a peaceful and loving environment we will reward you with years of love and loyalty.

Cats are special - it's People who make the Problems....

Effective Flea Treatment - Buy Cat Flea Control Products

My mummy uses Stronghold, but you can only get that from the vet. Same with Revolution....

And finally.... How independent are cats?

What do cats like? Independence is Relative....

Whatever Dog People say, cats love company, we love conversation and the "flattery voice". We are not big and robust, so rambunctious children frighten us away but we DO care, we DO love you, we HATE it when you fight and we get sad when you leave us alone all day and all night. Please love us as much as the children you made us into....

Thank YOU!

Hopefully you now understand what cats like. If you liked this lens, or have any questions, please meow here and mummy or I will get back to you if we're not too much into our claw sharpening or catnip mice....

Thank you!!

Nighttime activities should be the cat's decision. Especially if he's feeling a little romantic.

I'm with you - cats don't need to go out at night and they are much safer indoors. None of my cats have ever been put out at night and they are just fine.

I am the ghostwriter for one of our cats, Lady Ghost Whispurr, and she instructed me to leave a comment on this lens. She likes it a lot. She says she is glad you mentioned food, because that is her favorite topic. She is just finishing up her dinner, Fancy Feast with Gravy, as you so delightfully mentioned, and will soon finish up Wiley's because he only drinks the gravy. If you feel in the mood, perhaps you could stop by her lens and says hi.

Hi there! I'm Coco, Bikerchick's kitty. I just wanted to let you know that I loved your lens.

I get so sad when Bikerchick goes out to work every day. I cry and cry at the door till she gets back, but when she does, I am sooooo happy to see her, I curl up next to her every chance I get.

Excellent advice. I have found that most cats love the poem 'The Owl and the Pussycat', especially when the owl looked up to the stars above and sang to his small guitar. 5*
