Christmas Sweaters and Hoodies for Dogs
Christmas Sweaters & Hoodies for Dogs are Adorable and Practical
Whether you think Christmas Sweaters are ugly or cute, you'll have to admit that these dogs are adorable in their Christmas sweaters and hoodies.
Christmas sweaters for dogs are also practical as they keep dogs warmer on outings as well as indoors in these days (and nights) of higher fuel prices and lower thermostats. As explained further down this page, there are very practical reasons most dogs need the extra warmth provided by a sweater or hoodie.
A Festive Sweater and Fun Gift
How Many Days 'Til Christmas?
Christmas will be here sooner than you think and, if you are like me, you shop year 'round and when you see something that would be perfect for a pet or person on your gift list, you buy it and put it away until then. It makes for better budgeting, makes large gift lists manageable and the holidays much less stressful. After all, you have enough to do without having to deal with crowded stores, finding a parking spot, and hoping items on your list haven't been sold out!
So if you see a dog sweater you'd love to get for that special pooch, be smart, make your life easier, and buy it now.
Plus you'll also have it on hand to take photos for your Christmas cards ahead of time.

Knit Dog Sweater With Santas Frolicking in the Snow
Why Most Dogs Need Warm Clothing
Many dogs were not bred for colder weather. Smaller dogs and larger short-haired dogs benefit from a cozy sweater or hoodie when the temperature drops. Dogs with dense fur (as opposed to hair) coats are able to retain enough body heat in the cold without help. This is true of huskies, St. Bernards, and similar northern breeds, but not of many other types of dogs.
Contrary to popular belief, dogs really do feel the cold. This is especially the case with smaller breeds, dogs not genetically suited to colder environments, and older dogs that may have arthritis or other health issues or mobiity problems. And your pet will love the extra attention their outfit will garner when out for walks or when visitors come over.

Not Just for Walks Outside...
Sweaters and hoodies are not just for outdoors these days. Many homes and other buildings are kept at cooler temperatures than they were, say, ten years ago - and many of us lower it even more at night. (If you need an extra blanket at night, you can bet your dog does too -- or you might want to find a heated bed or pad for your pet, whether electric or specially constructed to retain and reflect your pet's body heat.)
Unlike blankets that tend to not stay in place very long, a properly fitting snuggly warm sweater will stay in place to keep Fido warm throughout the day and especially at night.
How to Measure Your Dog for Sweater Size
Size measurements often vary by manufacturer, so be sure to check their guidelines. You'll need a tape measure and you might want to grab a pencil or pen and some paper to write down your results.
First, make sure your pet is groomed so brush or comb so hair or fur is smooth and your measurements will be accurate.
To measure the neck, place the tape measure around her neck loosely enough so you can fit two fingers under it. (If you know your dog's collar size, you can use that.)
For the chest size, measure around the dog's body just behind the front legs. The tape should be snug but not tight.
To get an accurate length measurement it is best to have the dog stand. You'll want to place the tape at the base of the neck and run it straight along the dog's spine to the base of the tail. If you have a male dog check to see if the garment is shorter in the front. If not you might want to take one or two inches off this measurement to make sure he has enough clearance to "make his mark" on his favorite tree so the garment stays dry.
Don't have a tape measure?
You can use a non-stretching string or ribbon to measure. Mark where the ribbon meets itself (on chest and neck measurement) or at the appropriate length. You can then measure the string on a ruler, yardstick, or metal tape measure.
One More Note About Fit
You want a sweater to fit snuggly enough so your dog cannot easily remove it but not so tight as to be uncomfortable. You also don't want it to be so big that it might drag on the ground, trip the dog, or catch on something.
