How Will You Celebrate National Dog Day?

National Dog Day is always celebrated on August 26 of each year. It was created in 2004 by the National Dog Day Foundation as a way to encourage dog ownership and to provide dogs with a happy, safe, abuse free life. What a wonderful goal! That furry four-footed creature, little or big, who has stolen your heart... that amazing police dog you saw being a hero... those awesome dogs who serve the disabled as assistance dogs... and that fuzzy little scrawny mutt you rescued from the pound... That's who we're celebrating on National Dog Day!

Are you owned by a canine? Come on, 'fess up... you know you are! I certainly am. I've worked with over 50 rescue dog cases since 2000 when I started Sheila's Schnauzies Miniature Schnauzer Rescue & Sanctuary in Omaha, Nebraska... most of them Miniature Schnauzers, every one with a different personality, almost every one placed into a forever loving home! Those are the dogs I am personally celebrating on Dog Day! I'm also celebrating my own beloved pets who are now at Rainbow Bridge – Sheina Marie, Sparky Lynn, and Scrappy Jack. I'm celebrating my rescues who have gone to the Bridge too – so many – Lily Rose, Ivy, Baxter,Tosha, Springer, Bailey, Koby and Monty. And there are others. All of them passed away in loving homes after many wonderful years there.

So grab your own Fido or Fiona, give him or her a big hug for me, and let's explore how to celebrate National Dog Day!

A great hub .I used to have a schnauzer called Pepper. She was wonderful and was the boss of our Doberman without a doubt. She lived until almost 17 years and we missed her terribly. Due to circumstances we have two kitties now but I always love reading anything to do with dogs. Voting up and sharing.

I missed the national dog day! Rats. I had no idea. Well, I can't say much about my dog, since I don't have one (sob). I've always wanted one, but until I am no longer renting, it won't happen. I want a border collie. that's my dream dog.

@LaraineRoses: I'm so sorry for the loss of your two furkids. I know how hard that is. I'm glad your Bella is having her moment in the sun now being "only dog" - I've seen that happen and it's pretty amazing what those quiet ones are hiding! Thanks for the blessings!

We have only one dog now. Two died not long ago. What a blow .. they both had cancer. Bella Blue was very quiet when the other dogs were still living. She has come into her own now and is having a ball. (literally) We play ball, go for walks and I think that she likes to be the center of attention. I didn't realize what a character she had .. it shines now. Thank you for writing this interesting lens. Angel blessings!

@adragast24: Yes, of course you can link to this article!! Are you kidding, I'd be thrilled! Thanks so much! You know, I've always loved small dogs but I have really fallen in love with my German Shepherd granddaughter Macie. I guess it's because I've been with her since she was just a 2 month old baby! But I do adore her.

Cute dogs you have. I do have a preference for big ones though (just my personal taste). Can i link to this article in my article about silly, funny and sad celebrations in August?
