Some vets say any time during the first year, others say between 6 and 12 months.  For ladies smile, it should be done before their first heat.

Lots of debate on this one.

I had my pug puppy fixed when she was six months old.

As has been already pointed out, there is a lot of debate on this, and you often have to go with what your vet wants to do. Most vets have a time in their mind that they think is best, and if you call them and tell them the age of your dog then they'll be able to tell you when they want to see the dog for spaying/neutering. My last dog was neutered at seven months, though I've been told he could have been done earlier. My current dog was spayed when she was only four months, which I would have previously thought was too early (she was still at the shelter at the time), but she healed very quickly and doesn't have the same fear of the vet many of my previous dogs have had.

Yep - agreed... lots of debate on this one. Some vets will tell you at six months, others will say after their first heat (for females). We've done both and had no health issues either way.
