I have rescued a 15 year oldShamrock Macaw who I am working with to step up. lots of biting
Is beak is extremely sharp and I have placed the sandy perch hoping he would use it..he does not...suggestions?
Do not use a sandy perch or any kind of perch. He sounds like he may have been abused in the past. The perch looks like a weapon to him so please avoid using it unless you want to get bitten. Use gloves when you work with him. You can put your hand up and let him get onto your hand. Please speak in a soft gentle voice. You need a lot of patience with this bird since he is afraid of humans. I have used a towel if the bird is hard to manage and needs to be put back in the cage. Let him get used to you. Once he sees you are not going to hurt him he will respond. Time and patience are the key. I have been taking care of parrots for 20 years.
