What is the best tool for a dog with multiple coats and is shedding the winter coat?
We have a Norwegian Elkhound / German Shepherd mix and he actually has 3 different coats. In the summer he sheds his under coat, and he always seems to be itching because of it. Is there a tool that we can use that will help brush out that undercoat for him?
I use a grooming rake. I get ones that are coated with a slick type material (I'm sorry I don't know the name) that allows the teeth to slide more easily through the coat. Shelties are double coated breeds and also shed the undercoat twice a year. We are in shedding season too at my house!!
I rake out the coat and then use a slicker to remove the hair loosened by the rake.
I hope that helps some.
No, really, my favorite comb is the Furminator. The name sounds goofy, but it's fantastic. I have a husky and a German Shepherd and it's what I use on them. The first time you use it, you will be amazed and how much fur it removes. It works way better than every other comb I've tried.
