I love black cats

Updated on November 16, 2014

My babies!!!

I have 3 black cats. Lilith, Angus and Maia. They're all rescued. I've had them since kittens. I had Lilith for about 6 months when I thought she could do with a friend. I then went to a cat rescue center with the intention of getting another cat. I saw Angus and his sister Maia and couldn't separate them so I came home with 2 cats. They are all black. I love black cats. The lady running the rescue center said that unfortunately, to these days, black cats get left behind due to the belief that they bring bad luck. They are my 3 babies and love them dearly.

Angus and Maia, 3 months old

I can spend hours watching my 3 cats. They are all so different in character. Angus is really cuddly and spends hours sleeping on people's laps.

Maya is a primadonna. I'm sure she thinks she's the most fabulous creature ever. When she walks she wobbles her head from side to side in perfect syncronization with her bum, a proper catwalk really!!!!

She' also very playful and daring; I have found her several times on the roof of my 2 storey house (not sure how she gets up there yet). She's obsessed with frogs and keeps on bringing them in the house. A you can imagine I do a lot of running around to try and rescue the poor little creatures from the house. Quite a challenge.....

Lilith is a proper lady and she's got some real human traits. She doesn't meaow, she tries to talk. She has her coffee (cup of water) in the morning when I have mine, she loves water and always has to put her paws in the water when I have a bath. She loves kisses and sitting on people shoulders. She can be moody, loving and happy. The funny thing is before she does something she looks at me and asks in her own special language: If you could say a cat is polite that's her. Lilith loves kissing people's noses!

Superstition origins

The superstition of black cats and their association with bad luck generated in Europe in the Middle ages. Cats in general where associated to witches and believed to be their familiar. They were believed to be able to shape shift and help witches and demons in their working. The belief of black cats as witches familiar most probably derives by the mith of Hecate, the greek goddess of the underworld who's also known as the goddess of witches; her symbol was a black cat. Due to the belief that black cats would bring misfortune and death, they were hunted and killed during the middle ages; there's a befief that as a consequesce the rats population increased aiding the spread of the plague.

Pure black cats are rare these days due to the Middle ages massacre and you will notice that most of what you would call a black cat have a tint of reddish brown.

Do you think black cats bring bad luck?

Update!!!

I've had my 3 cats nearly 3 years now. Lilith who's the oldest and smallest seem to have become the leader! Behind her sweet looks she's very bossy and the other two cats seem to fear her. Quite funny considering Angus is twice her size!
