Portmeirion Pottery - A Brief History

Founded in 1960 in Stoke-On-Trent England, when a small pottery decorating company was taken over by pottery designer Susan Williams- Ellis and her husband Euan Cooper- Willis. In 1961 they bought a pottery manufacturing company which allowed them to make and decorate their own products from start to finish and Portmeirion pottery was born. It has now been renamed The Portmeirion group.

Before the take over Susan had been commissioned to make designs on tableware to sell at the Portmeirion village gift shop in Wales.

Portmeirion is a beautiful Italianate styled village bordering the Snowdonia national park in north Wales, and became a place of pilgrimage for fans of the cult TV serious starring Patrick Macgoohan and called " The prisoner " which was filmed on location there.

Two of Portmeirions collections, Botanic Garden and Pomona, are so pretty that I had a hard time choosing when I started my own collection some years ago.

The Botanic garden range features flowers and Butterflies, maybe the odd dragonfly or ladybird thrown in for good measure, whilst the Pomona range features fruits and blossom. Both collections have a distinctive dark green leaf motif around the edge of the plates and saucers.

But if you prefer more contemporary designs which are much less ornate but still classy then recent designs by Sophie Conran and other artists may be more to your liking.

Portmeirion Pottery - Beautiful - Functional - And Highly Collectable

Portmeirion pottery and tableware is classic in design and very highly collectable. Who wouldn´t be thrilled to own such classy table and cook ware.

I have a few pieces of my own which I absolutely adore, and have found to be very well made, useful, and a delight to look at.

As well as producing wonderful pottery, Potmeirion can also provide you with Table linens, place mats, cake knives and everything you would need to make every dinner party or family meal a special occasion.

Who wouldn´t love to sit down to a table laid with beautiful table and kitchen ware from Portmeirian pottery ?

Customer Comments On Portmeirion Products From Amazon.Com

We bought the product for mom and she absolutely loved it. It's even more lovely
than in the picture. Worth every penny.

I hesitated a lot between botanical garden and pomona. All my friends have botanical garden so I couldn't compare. when I got, I loved it. They are so beautiful and durable. I am going to collect all of Pomona.

I was given this lovely teapot by my co-workers when I retired at the end of March, 2011. It is beautiful to look at and has a nice large lid so it's easy to clean the inside. I enjoy it every time I use it and it is particularly appreciated when I serve tea in the garden. I have the Portmeirion mugs and it holds 5 mugfuls - a good supply of tea. I call this beautiful china to be used every day.

      Hiya yourself Nell.

Lovely to hear from you, but we have been in contact on another site today. Maybe you haven't realised I´m &Hollyhocks100. I wish I would have kept the same pseudonym, but to be honest, I thought you had to change it.

Still nice for you to come and say Hi though, hope you are OK too :))

      Hi Graham.

I´m so pleased now my PC´S fixed so I can respond to comments and leave them on hubs too. Lovely to hear from you and I hope you are keeping well too. Still stuck here in Spain trying to sell the house, but nothing moving on that front for ages. Funny you should say about keeping warm, even though it was a joke, you have had better weather in the UK than we have had in Spain during June, it´s picking up now though.

Keep well love and thanks for the comment. My very best wishes to you and yours.

      Anne.

Hi Annie. How are you? I hope that all is well. I have been to Port Merion a few times over the years. I remember The Prisoner series well. Yes, I would recommend a visit it is a beautiful place, quite different to anywhere else. As a point of interest they do cater for visitors using wheelchair or scooters.

I hope it is not to cold for you over there, keep smilin'

      Best wishes.

      Graham.

Hi Wiccan sage. Yes they are really beautiful and collectors pieces too. When I leave Spain and return to the UK I will certainly be adding to my own collection, don´t want to buy anything at the moment as all will have to be shipped when I eventually make my move and I would hate for something so delightful to be broken.

Hi Nell. If it looks like this it more than likely is, but the back stamp will tell you anyway. It´s is lovely isn´t it. I have just a few pieces and was torn between Botanic garden and pomona, they are both lovely designs. What a shame about your tea set, I´d have been knocking on the door until I got it back. Thanks for thinking of me Nell, I must admit I am not the greatest at the moment, big changes don´t suit me at all, and it seems to be one thing after another just now, you know how it goes love I´m sure. Anyway, nice to hear from you. Take care love :)

Hi Anne, the funny thing is I have a few pieces that look like these, maybe it is this? lol! I don't tend to notice what's in front of my face! but they are gorgeous, and just up my street so to speak! we had a beautiful tea set years ago, similar, and we 'lent' it to one of my hubbys family! yes, you guessed, disappeared like the proverbial! great hub, and hope everythings okay with you? nell

      Hi again Maj.

I´m smiling to myself because I remember the prisoner series too, it was very weird LOL.

My hearty and I used to camp just a few miles up the road from Portmeirion ( Criccieth in fact) at least 4 or 5 times every year, and we visited the village too, it´s very pretty as are lots of places in north Wales. I have a few pieces of the Botanic garden pottery and used to add to my collection occasionally when we went into Porthmadoc to do our shopping.

When I return to the UK one of the first things I want to do is go and visit our friends who still live in Criccieth, I´m so looking forward to that, though it will be bitter sweet without my Hearty.

Take care maj, and don´t forget to treat yourself to those FitFlops :)

Hi Annie, sadly I haven't got any pieces of this fabulous pottery but I would dearly love some.

I know Portmeirion, fabulous place and I remember the 'The Prisoner' series filmed there. (Ohhh am I that old?)

Great hub with lots of product information - I'm sure anyone choosing from the Portmeirion range will not be disappointed.

Hope all is well - cheers and best...

Hi Joe. Oh bless you my love for your lovely comments. I do know that Portmeirion pottery is very very collectable, no wonder really as it´s so beautiful and the botanic garden range I can spot from a mile away on a car boot sale. because it´s quite expensive to buy, even selling it second hand should bring a good price. I do have a few pieces myself and I love them, maybe when I get back to the UK I will start collecting in earnest, but from sales and eBay. Good luck with your search to find some in your neck of the woods. :)

      Hi, Anne!

I love hubs like yours because I'm always interested in information about products I will most likely encounter in my buying trips. You may know that I love Belleek from a hub I did last year. Well, now I also love Portmeirion products designed by Susan Williams-Ellis. Just did a search on eBay, and these products are SMOKING HOT! Thank you for your diligent research and writing, Anne! Aloha, my friend!

      Joe
