SDHC Class 6 Memory Cards - On Sale Online

There's a new sheriff in town when it comes to digital camera storage cards.

It is the SD Association. You may know that the SD card in your older camera has been upgraded? The newer cameras are requiring a SDHC memory card now. The "HC" stands for High Capacity.

So the is a newly established specification rating for the minimum data transfer for standard and high-capacity cards. Not only are there new requirements for how large the memory cards are, but there is also a new requirement for data transfer speed. There are three SDHC speed classes - Class 2, Class 4 and Class 6. Each Class number indicates the transfer rate. They can transfer data at least 2, 4 and 6MB per second.

This is quite necessary now that we are buying digital cameras that are mostly 10 or more megapixels in capacity. Plus they usually have the capability for recording video at 720p or even 1080p at high frame per second rates. So, the older SD cards have neither the storage capacity nor the transfer rate to handle the amount of data that newer cameras are capable of.

Buy SDHC Class 6 Memory Cards On Amazon

I recall a few years back when I bought my first digital camera that all cameras came with a 16 MB storage card. You could take only a few photos before you had to transfer them to another storage device or delete them.

I quickly ran out and purchased a HUGE 64 MB storage card. It had plenty of room for my 3-megapixel camera.

Not true any more. I now have a 4 GB card and two 2 GB backup cards.

But these are of the SD variety.

Now, this is really important to note. If you camera uses SD cards, DO NOT buy SDHC cards because they are faster and larger. The technology is not backward compatible. The SDHC Class 6 Memory Card will not work in your older digital camera.

Brands of SDHC Class 6 Memory Card

There are several manufacturers of SDHC Class 6 Memory Card.

Kingston, Lexar, SanDisc, AData, and of course, Transcend.

If you buy one of these, you can't go wrong.

But, once more, make sure you are getting the Class 6 card. Your camera may work with the lower classes, but I would not take a chance with a newer model camera like the Canon Digital Rebel T2i. Spend a couple of more dollars and get the best you can buy. In the long run, you will not be let down by your equipment.

It would be a shame to spend $600-$1500 for a camera and try to save $10 on a slower SDHC Memory Card.

It's All Greek To Me - Or Maybe Japanese?
