Compact Digital Camera Buying Tips

Updated on March 30, 2016

Before buying a compact digital camera, you should consider few things which will help you to buy a better camera. Here are the tips, easy to remember. Just follow them and enjoy better photography.

What is a Compact Camera?

Compact camera is a camera designed for casual use, and it is small in size. You can carry it in your pocket. Compact cameras are not for professional use and generally they are 'Point and Shoot Cameras'. Although the photographs taken on a compact digital camera are good, you can not compare such cameras with the professional Digital SLR cameras, as DSLR cameras have great function and they give great results.

However, for casual photography, you can use a compact camera. The great benefit of a compact camera is that you do not need to have knowledge of photography to take pictures. Just point and shoot.. Moreover, as the Camera is compact and light weight, it is easy to carry it.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Compact Digital Camera

Before buying a compact digital camera, you need to know some important things which will help you to choose a better camera.

A digital image is made of small elements which are known as Pixels. One megapixel is equal to One Million Pixels. Most of the current digital compact cameras are available in the range of 6 Mega Pixels to 16 or more Mega Pixels (approximately).

More Megapixels means more fine and quality images. So always look at the Mega Pixels of a camera. The maximum Mega Pixels of the camera are shown on it's body.

Optical Zoom

A Zoom lens helps you to go closer to the object without leaving your position. Optical Zoom Lens give you clear and sharper pictures so this type of lens is very useful while taking photographs. They are inbuilt in compact digital cameras. The zooming range is shown in a number followed by X, i.e. 10x optical zoom means the lens can change it focal length by 10 times. Larger the number, larger the zooming power.

You should look for a camera with zoom range according to your requirement, but I suggest you to buy camera with at least 10x zoom.

Size of Display Screen

The size of display screen is another important thing to consider a compact digital camera. Large the screen, larger preview of the image you are going to take.

Brand Name

Like other electronic goods, here too the brand name is important. The famous brands are Canon, Nikon, Sony, Samsung, Fujifilm, Pentax, Ben Q, Olympus, Sigma, Lumix, GE, Mamiya and many more.

Warranty and After Sales Service

Generally, most of the branded cameras companies/distributes give one year warranty plus after sales service. You should not buy a camera without warranty and after sales service as if a camera gives a problem, the repairing is vary costly.

The after sales service center must be within your city or town.

Your Budget

So how much you want to spend on buying a camera? It depends on you. Prices of cameras varies according to various factors. Try to buy better camera with lesser price.

Good information. Another buying option to consider is a wide angle lens setting. This alternative, I found, produces better close-range shots. ~ Voted up.
