The first thing that most crocheters crochet is a small granny square, but making Afghans from small squares can become a little tedious, and large squares are very effective. Twelve in squares are the answer. Patterns for little Afghan squares are everywhere but patterns for large squares can be somewhat difficult to find, but there are twelve-inch square patterns available on the internet. Twelve-inch squares look very effective in a sampler Afghan.

Crochet Pattern Central (CPC) is the most easily navigable of the online free crochet pattern directories and has many patterns for twelve-inch squares. It would make a lovely Afghan or pillow suitable for many people and rooms. It is difficult to pick the best from the many delightful patterns for 12-inch squares at Ravelry, there are so many attractive squares.
Twelve-inch squares lend themselves beautifully to sampler Afghans. They also draw the eye, and you can do many amazing things with large squares. The more solid squares make smashing pillow or cushion covers and an Afghan with a matching pillow made from large squares looks striking. Free crochet patterns for twelve-inch squares are more abundant than you might imagine and are an excellent way to use up those odd skeins and balls of yarn remaining from other projects.
