Sketching Cars from Basics

Since 2006, I started writing online about Car Design Education. I do it via my personal website and lately also via social networks such as Facebook, Instagram & Youtube.

My main objective has been always the will to share what I learned in school, to help young people, that are struggling, to achieve their dream to become designers.

Since 1 month I started giving , on my Youtube channel, live sketching sessions to draw together with some of the followers connected and explain to them the steps and method I follow to sketch correctly.

Explaining how I do is important to make the tutorial more useful and clear to them, to go step by step following all main drawing rules is a way to put together the theory and the practice in that very moment of action.

The most important thing to do is to practice every day to get the feeling and the right mood.

Exercising the line quality as warm up before steches helps to feel the tool (pencil or pen) and the arm motion (not the wrist). Learning simple perspectives using the "box technique" helps to understand how to draw a car in the position we want. Sketching wheels properly means to understand the reason the minor axis is the important one of our ellipses and why it goes to the vanishing points.

The chiaro-scuro shading technique done with a color pencil is fundamental to illustrate and show shapes and volumes (our creative part), knowing the right composition on page tips helps to construct a dynamic presentation of our sketched or rendered subject (car or product).

We can read all those important notions in many books and e-books (I also wrote a few with illustrated tutorials), but I found that drawing live helps people to a faster comprehension.

It is a little like when I was teaching design sketching in school, me sketching making a tutorial and all the students laround the table watching and trying to do the same thing.

Starting to Use Colors

The cool thing is that people ask questions while I make the tutorial and I can answer back satisfying their request. For example, people asked me to show how to use markers to color a quick sketch. At the end of my sketch I took a couple of cool gray markers, a black one and I did it explaing how it is suggested to start not to make a mess out of it. First the light marker to build up a sort of shading from light to dark.

In other words, I find this Live Sketching Session a great free opportunity for everybody interested in learnig car design sketching. Design students that have some difficulties or simple car lovers. Twice a week I dedicate a bit of my time for this educational mission.

I decided to include one of my videos to show better what I do hoping to stimulate your curiosity.

Enjoy!
