How to draw a cowboy hat

Updated on November 28, 2012

Howdy partner! In this fantabulous tutorial, you will be learning how to draw a simple cowboy hat. I know there are more detailed cowboy hats than this but I wanted to make this as simple as possible and just provide a tutorial for drawing the basic outline of a cowboy hat.

If you have been reading some of my other tutorials then I am pretty sure you know the protocol by now. Be sure to have your pencil and paper or tablet pen ready before you begin. When you are ready, you may move forward to the first step. :)

Step 1

Firstly, draw the top portion of the crown to start. The crown begins at the top and usually has sort of a humpy/camel back appearance.

Step 2

Extend the crown of the hat by drawing the rest of it and stopping at the location where the brim will sit. The brim is the bottom portion of the hat that helps to block the sun light from the wearer's eyes.

Step 3

At this point, you should have a pretty basic outline of the hat once you draw in the brim. In these next steps, we will be focusing on detailing the rest of the hat.

Step 4

Try to draw a separation from the crown and the brim if you can. Some cowboy hats have a band at the base of the crown, this one does not have a band. But you are more than welcome to draw one in if you'd like. :)

Step 5

In this last detail step, draw in two creases at the top of the crown. The creases were installed in cowboy hats to make it easier for the wearer to hold with one hand.

Well, I hope you enjoyed this cowboy hat tutorial. It should be pretty simple for you guys to follow and if you want to comment on your experiences, feel free to write them down below. Until next time. :)
