Golden Age on Online Photo Contests

Updated on November 16, 2009

The Golden Age of Online Photo Contests in Canada

This is indeed a Golden Age; the web is growing fast and some of the fastest growing segments are the coupon moms and sites supporting 'professional contesters'. Most of these people are just killing time online and find themselves in this niche because it could pay some bills, while others have selected this avenue as their forte and hope to 'go pro' and pursue a life of contest participation and rewards. And today that's entirely possible.

Online contests and coupons on the internet today are as ubiquitous as the sound of church bells in pioneer towns on Sunday morning one hundred years ago. This is the new frontier and the dusty trails lead to unknown lands and undiscovered meadows of wealth and prosperity. Just come to my saloon, or frequent my blog parlor and you could win.
Serial contest websites now flood the net:

Votigo is a truly amazing third party contest website that offers a myriad of social media challenges. The page marked ‘solutions’ is a client side look at what sponsors receive when they agree to host a challenge. Business soon comes to understand they are promoting ‘risk free brand engagement’ which is interesting because that's a huge concern for small to medium sized online businesses that can't afford expensive reputation management. They understand that contests are generally ‘risk free’ because the submitted material is seldom contrary to the ‘brand understanding’ presented in the copy.

Lenzr is a serial photo contest website that gives photographers exposure and lets business sponsor art. Professional cameramen love how the website allows registered members to link back to their own galleries right inside their user profiles. Lenzr is also unique in the manner in which it allows the membership to have 100% control to rate the photos and even decide the winner. The prize is always awarded to the most popular photo which is a measure of the amount of registered votes, popular votes and # of votes over time.

This web challenge hopes people will upload shots of Upper Canada Village, and Confederation hall and University of Toronto and the El Mocombo etc How about Marineland in Niagara Falls? Or the wax museum or Fort Charles in Sault St Marie or the Golden Nugget in Rainy River or Husky the Muskie in Kenora? And how about the Japanese pagoda in Ontario Place with a shot of CN Tower in the background? These are classic sights, and these are exactly the images that have been uploaded this month; these pictures are competing on the site right now!

On Lenzr, and indeed the online photo contest model in general is win win win - Photographers get prizes and much needed exposure and link love, visitors gets the interaction of voting, commenting and seeing which photo wins, and sponsors get to build interesting brand challenges and buzz marketing. This combination of rewards is what makes Votigo and Lenzr two prime examples of ‘serial contest websites’ in a golden age online.
