A Father's Day project - A Pencil Holder

Updated on October 5, 2013

What better Father's Day gift than something Dad can put on his desk and see every day?

Even in this supposedly paperless age of computers and cellphones, Dad still uses pencils and pens and needs a place to store them.

This classy pencil holder says "I love you Dad" and "I made this especially for you"!

Source

What you'll need

  • empty frozen juice can or similar cardboard can
  • twine or rope, coloured or plain
  • paint (colour matching the twine or the rope)
  • glue (white glue and hot glue)
  • paint brush
  • scissors

How to make it

Paint the outside of the juice can in a colour close to the colour of the twine that you have chosen.

Note: if necessary, add a second coat of paint to make the outside opaque.

Put a dot of hot glue near the bottom of the juice can.

Glue the end of the twine to the juice can.

Brush the whole can with diluted white glue.

Turn the twine around the juice can.

Continue to turn the twine until the can is completely covered from top to bottom.

When you reach the top of the can, put a dot of hot glue to attach the end of the twine to the side of the can.

I will have to try this, you just can't have too many holders and as I have started sketching again I have loads of pencils. This would be great for many things though that I have laying about or stuck in drawers. Thank you! ^

This Hub brings back the times when my boys were young and they wanted to make something for their Dad, for Father's Day. They tried to make "After Shave Lotion"...It was BAD...But he said he loved it, as well as the Homemade Cards.

Thank you for your visit, Lurana!

That must be quite a special side table! You made me so curious, that while I started answering you, I had to search.... and I found it! Wouaw! The result is quite nice and without knowing, I would never have guessed that there is a tire underneath the twine! The model I found has two colours of twine!

Twine can produce a very natural look to a lot of projects that's why I like to work with it.

Thanks for your kind comment, Lurana!

      Enjoy your week!

A great one! Very accessible and inexpensive materials, and a functional craft too. Really nice gift idea.

I saw a project recently that used thick twine around a rubber car tire (same style as this pencil holder though) and then they attached legs somehow to make a small side table.

Thank you for all the crafty ideas! :-) Lurana

Thank you very much Blossom! Father's Day is June 16th this year in Canada and in the U.S. (the third Sunday of June). With the Mother's Day project, I realized that not all the countries celebrate that special day at the same time during the year. Mother's Day is the second Sunday of May for a lot of countries but in France, it was yesterday.

I just looked on wikipedia and it's true for Father's Day as well. It's celebrated the third Sunday of June in a lot of countries but otherwise, it's spread out all along the year depending where you live. Very interesting!

Thank you for teaching me :-)

      Have a great week!

This is a good gift idea for Father's Day. Making something for a loved one just makes the gift even more special and meaningful because you made it yourself and it really shows your love for the person if you took the time to make your own gift instead of just buying one, not that there's anything wrong with buying gifts. In the end, it's all a matter of preference. Your step-by-step images of how to make the pencil holder really help to add to the written instructions so people can easily follow along when trying to make this pencil holder.
