A cute Mother's Day Gift - Potpourri Hat

Updated on October 5, 2013
A Sunday at the Tuileries
A Sunday at the Tuileries | Source

Lavishly decorated hats used to be in fashion at one time. Ribbons, flowers, fruits, birds of paradise, nothing was too extravagant.

Nowadays, you don't see hats like that very often, but you can re-create the charm of that period with this original Mother's Day craft.

When creating this potpourri hat, use your imagination. This article presents only one example of what can be done. Many other designs are possible. Be original, that's the way your Mom loves you!

Decorate the hat

Take a round paper bowl of 6¼ in (16 cm) diameter and 1½ in (3.5 cm) deep.

Paint the outside of the bowl in a colour of your choice. When the outside of the
bowl is dry, you can paint the inside (optional).

For a nicer finish, add a thin coat of acrylic varnish.

Start by gluing a cord around the hat with the glue gun.

Avoid using flat ribbon as the side of the bowl is sloped and it's not easy to adapt the ribbon exactly to the edge of the bowl unless the ribbon is elastic.

Then glue artificial flowers in an arrangement that suits you.

If you want to make your own flowers, refer to the beautiful Paper Rose or Fabric Flower tutorials by Jamie Brock.

In order to be able to suspend the little hat, cut a piece of thin ribbon and make it into a loop that you glue to the edge of the bowl with the glue gun or white glue.

Fill the hat with potpourri

Pour potpourri in the bowl.

Cut a circle of tulle or gauze big enough to cover the opening of the bowl.

Put white glue all around the edge of the bowl.

Glue the piece of tulle in place. Let dry.

The ribbon loop allows you to suspend the little hat with potpourri.

Joelle, this is an excellent idea for Mother's Day! Okay, since I know didley squat about potpourri, when you present the gift to a special someone, you show them the hat right side up, correct? When they go to use it, do they turn the hat upside down? I know this sounds like I'm an idiot, but I probably am. LOL! In any event, thanks for sharing this clever craft idea! Aloha!

You are very talented, these are a lovely make.

I also liked how you included some historical background to the origins of ladie's adorned hats.

As always your instructions are clear and you have made a creative project come to life :)

Hi Joe! I know that sometimes when I see a picture or even a drawing of the paper bowl it's difficult to really see it it's the outside or the inside. For this project, I decorate the outside and I place the potpourri in the hollow part. The idea is that the Mom could hang the little hat to decorate a washroom for example; that's why I thought of the potpourri.

I hope this clarify a little bit :-)

      Have a nice Sunday!

Thank you for your kind comment Anna! When it's possible, I like to give a little extra and not just the craft.

In a previous life, I probably must have lived in the period illustrate in the picture at the top because I love to wear hats ;-)

Enjoy your Sunday! Here the weather is gorgeous....finally 20 degrees (above zero)!

Your title is right. I did find this hat cute. Your images really show that. It's also great how you have images to go along with the instructions so readers can visualize things and better understand what you're saying.

This is the cutest idea and so functional! It would be easy for very young children to do, as well, with a minimal amount of adult help. I would have loved getting this from my kids when they were in grade school!

(My least favorite gift of all time was a plastic hairspray cap filled with plaster and a big pink rose stuck inside. I got two of them because I had twins in the same class of a very non-creative teacher.

      We talked! LOL)

    • kidscrafts profile image

kidscrafts 4 years ago from Ottawa, Canada

Thank you so much Annie! You made me laugh today :-) Especially the two of them part :-)))

When I was a teacher, I tried my best to have the kids create something useful, beautiful and that would last. When I was teaching grade 5 kids, I had them do a cross stich project for mother's day.... and yes, boys and girls! And when you think about it... that's math. I loved to integrate art and other subjects; kids learn always better that way!

Thanks for coming for a visit today... and have a great week!

Thanks Dwachira! Your heard correctly... it's a paper bowl. The brand I use is Royal Chinet (specific to Canada) but sold a little bit everywhere in the world I think under the brand Chinet. You wouldn't believe the things I can create with paper plates.... even puppets :-)

I like to have step by step pictures because it makes the explanations easier to understand.
