A cute Mother's Day Gift - Potpourri Hat
Lavishly decorated hats used to be in fashion at one time. Ribbons, flowers, fruits, birds of paradise, nothing was too extravagant.
Nowadays, you don't see hats like that very often, but you can re-create the charm of that period with this original Mother's Day craft.
When creating this potpourri hat, use your imagination. This article presents only one example of what can be done. Many other designs are possible. Be original, that's the way your Mom loves you!
Decorate the hat
Take a round paper bowl of 6¼ in (16 cm) diameter and 1½ in (3.5 cm) deep.
Paint the outside of the bowl in a colour of your choice. When the outside of the
bowl is dry, you can paint the inside (optional).
For a nicer finish, add a thin coat of acrylic varnish.
Start by gluing a cord around the hat with the glue gun.
Avoid using flat ribbon as the side of the bowl is sloped and it's not easy to adapt the ribbon exactly to the edge of the bowl unless the ribbon is elastic.
Then glue artificial flowers in an arrangement that suits you.
If you want to make your own flowers, refer to the beautiful Paper Rose or Fabric Flower tutorials by Jamie Brock.
In order to be able to suspend the little hat, cut a piece of thin ribbon and make it into a loop that you glue to the edge of the bowl with the glue gun or white glue.
Fill the hat with potpourri
Pour potpourri in the bowl.
Cut a circle of tulle or gauze big enough to cover the opening of the bowl.
Put white glue all around the edge of the bowl.
Glue the piece of tulle in place. Let dry.
The ribbon loop allows you to suspend the little hat with potpourri.
