Quick Sketching: Why To Do It & How To Do It

Updated on June 30, 2009

All About Quick Sketching And My Thoughts On It

Drawing is a passion of mine and someday I hope to turn my passion into a career, however something that is a hobby of mine is just quick sketching. Quick sketching is something fun you can do all the time, anywhere and you don't really need to finish anything or make it perfect... it's just quick sketching after all.

Why Do Quick Sketching

I like o do quick sketching because I enjoy seeing what I can do with a pencil when I just spend 3-5 minutes on a drawing.

Sometimes I draw from my head and other times I draw what I see around me... either way quick sketching a great way to get the creative juices flowing and often times jot down ideas you might not have had if you were just drawing a full fledged drawing.

Doing quick sketching is great for gathering ideas in one places, take a piece of paper or sketch pad around and just sketch what interests you that you see around you... sketch that neat pattern you see in the carpet... or paint lines on the walls. Go around and take everyday items and textures and use your imagination to spice them up and create something new!

What Makes Quick Sketching Good

If you have a lot of ideas running through your head or are stressed quick sketching is also a great way to clear your head... just do some basic sketching, real quick and get down some of those ideas.. clear your mind and sketch down what your thinking, in a way that lightens the situation maybe. It's fantastic... I love doing it.

Quick sketching is also a wonderful way to help get your eyes and your hand to work in harmony, drawing what you see, how you see it is one of the most difficult things I've ever come across and that's true for a lot of people I've met and know. Looking for a way to get better at sketching down what's there is something a lot of people struggle towards, (I know I do!) and quick sketching is the best way I have come across to help with doing this.

What Quick Sketching Is About

Quick sketching is all about allowing yourself to work freely, without expectations and requirements. The entire point of it is to move on from thing to thing sketching in under 5 minutes... then move on!

Make the drawing sketchy, the lines don't have to be smooth or perfect... this is where you really can get messy with it, have fun... don't even take an eraser with you, there's no point to it. Erasers are just not needed when your doing quick sketching, if you put a line in the wrong place just put a new line where it should be and leave the other one there. Another thing to remember is to sketch lightly... dark enough to see it but where not making final lines here we are just sketching, having fun, being creative and letting ourselves flow with it.

I have to say it, Become one with the pencil! Let your hand move freely and just go with it... there is no judging, no competition this is purely for you.. no one even has to see it, it's just for personal use.

What The Pages Are Used For, Ending Notes

Sometimes I like to keep a few of my sketch pages when I'm done, use the later for reference and ideas when I'm feeling down. Referring back to these are great when you need ideas, or for being able to return to good ideas and remembering what they were, :) these pages of quick ideas are just a note to keep your mind on what the ideas were, not at all set in stone this is is how it's going to look, experiment... jot down new ideas and improve upon old ones!

Quick sketching is a lot of fun and I think everyone should give it a go, even if they aren't an artist that works with paper or an artist at all, it's fun and entertaining and great for imagination.
