Workshops, needless to say, invariably lend a repository of information on any subject. Kids also can benefit from such workshops by gaining extra knowledge in their field of study. This summer, my kid attended a workshop of art & crafts conducted by his drawing teacher. The crafts that were molded there imparted kids info on some of the basic methods of folding, cutting and painting extensively used in art & crafts subject.

The workshop was intended to demonstrate the making of a designer plate painted with a tribal art Warli, a name plate and a photo frame. Materials needed for making these crafts were bought and kids had fun time learning to tailor them.

How art & crafts workshop can benefit your kid?

1. Generating interest in kids for partaking in crafting activities.

2. Developing creativity and enhancing their talent.

3. Producing crafts with an innovative touch.

1. Warli designer plate

Have you heard of Warli painting of art? It is a tribal art form originated in India. It is a rudimentary art form with a basic graphic representation including circles, squares and triangles. This Warli designer plate is the graphical depiction of a man playing a trumpet accompanied by dancing girls.

Materials needed:

  1. Thermocol plate
  2. Glass diamonds(Light-weight)
  3. Fabric paints
  4. Painting brush

As the thermocol plate is very light, you have to handle it with care. Paint it with the desired colors and decorate the edges using glass diamonds. Now, put Warli designs as in this picture using a thin painting brush. One thing to be noted is that the design is put symmetrically as the designer plate has to be visually appealing.

This designer plate can be used as a wall hanging using a double-sided tape.

2. Name plate

A name plate, as the name suggests, is used for identification often seen mounted on the walls or on stands. As a craft, thick, sturdy cardboard is used for the base here. Using decorative materials and fabric paints to attract kids, the name plate got crafted here.

Materals needed:

  1. Thick cardboard
  2. Fabric paint
  3. Glitter glue tube
  4. Decorative materials

Cut the cardboard in a long, rectangular shape. Paint it all over and write the name using glitter glue. Be sure to maintain the font throughout as it is the name that characterizes a name plate. Here, the teacher helped kids while writing using glue tube. Then, she had some tools to make paper flowers for decorating the name plate as seen in the picture.

The name plate got ready!

My kid then mounted it on the wall outside using a double-sided tape to welcome his father from the office!!

3. Photo frame

This is a commonly included item in kids craft making. Schools give projects for kids to make photo frames. Now-a-days, using several attractive materials, you can design a photo frame. In this workshop, the teacher used handmade papers to embellish this photo frame.

Materials needed:

  1. Cardboard
  2. Handmade papers
  3. Decorative materials

Two rectangular pieces of cardboard were wrapped by handmade paper in which one has a square cut on the center for inserting the photo. Wrapping on the edges needs attention as there should not be any bulge or wrinkles. The two pieces were joined together that forms the frame and a small stand made using cardboard got fixed on its back. The frame is then decorated with a stone laze on its borders.

Now, insert your loved one’s photo and place it in your table stand!!

Kids came out with flying colors towards the end of this workshop of art & crafts. Such workshops are really a boon to the kids in developing their creativity and in enhancing their knowledge in crafting.

This is another photo frame made using quilling craft. The kid had to spend considerable time working on this project for an exhibition in his school this year. Though quilling art is a time consuming and patience requiring activity, the fruit that comes out in the end is a marvel of art.
