Updated on August 1, 2015

Brother XL2610 Sewing Machine - A Free Arm Sewing Machine For Beginners

Have no idea which sewing machine to get as a beginner? Then, check out the basic ones first like the Brother XL2610 sewing machine. For those who know nothing about sewing and have little knowledge about bobbins, thread tension and foot presser, you are better off starting out with a fairly basic machine that is intuitive to use.

Of course, a good brand is essential to ensure that the machine that you are getting will not give you problems later on. A good sewing machine can last you years if you take care of it well.

For this model here, it is a Brother free arm sewing machine. If you are wondering what is a free arm sewing machine, it is basically to help you sew around cuffs , sleeves and trouser legs. You can slide one layer of the fabric over the free arm and start sewing without having to do any tricky maneuvers to prevent both layers from stitching up.

The Brother sewing machine XL2610 is an ideal model for beginners if you are currently learning the ropes or if you just want something to do simple home jobs. It is also a pink sewing machine which is a bonus to some.

Features Of The Brother 25-Stitch Free Arm Sewing Machine

The Brother XL2610 has 25 built-in stitches to help you with quilting works and decorative sewing among others. With that, there are 59 stitch functions which are basically the things that can you do with the 25 built-in stitches provided to increase the flexibility of the machine when it comes to patterns and such.

As mentioned above, this is also a free arm machine to help you sew tubular items like sleeves and cuffs easily but it also allows conversion back into a flat bed area for larger items.

An auto needle threader and thread cutter are included for added convenience. For buttonholes, you can make them using the 4-step buttonholer. The bobbin has a drop-in design which makes it easy to thread as well as to check how much supply remains. There is a dial for thread tension with stitch length and width control incorporated into the machine.

Other Cheap Brother Sewing Machines

Below are some other cheap Brother sewing machines that are on sale right now. They are around the same price range of the Brother XL2610 and basically, they are all sewing machine for beginners with slightly different features for each.

Brother XL2610 Sewing Machine - Should You Buy?

Firstly, this is a beginner sewing machine. It does not do heavy duty stuff. So, if you are a beginner but intend to sew thicker fabrics the Singer 4411 may be a better bet. It is very lightweight which makes it portable but the downside is it also lacks the power and rigidity for heavy duty sewing.

But for a novice, it is easy to use and yet, has enough variety in its features to do other functions as you pick up your skill. For sewing shirts, dresses, bags, baby clothes and other simple items, this machine is adequate. You just don't need a machine with too many features for basic stuff. So, the good thing is you can practically sew once the machine is out of the box with no complications to set you back.

The speed is also just right for a beginner. The drawback is there is no speed control available which means it could be a little slow for people with more advanced skills. Speed control is actually a practical feature to have but at the price that the Brother XL2610 is selling at, you just can't ask for more. It already packs a lot of features compared to sewing machines of the same price range.

All in all, this Brother free-arm sewing machine is the one to get if you are new to sewing but want a little variety for your projects along the way. It is worth a look for the budget conscious beginner as a first sewing machine as long as you have no intention to make thick items and complicated patterns for your projects.

Just finished sewing a reversable baby carrier for moms with a matching one for my granddaughter to carry her babydoll in. Turned out really cute. Bought a Brother CE-5000 PRW at a garage sale and I love it!
