Building a birdbox or Birdhouse

What you need

Making your own birdhouse needs minimal joinery skills, making this an excellent project for getting the kids involved in, and makes an excellent introduction into wood crafts and joinery skills. You also do not need a workshop full of state of the art machines.I get asked a lot to go into the local schools and helping the kids to make simple bird boxes. We have great fun creating these birdhouses, and by using simple plans and dimensions, make this activity not only fun but a great learning tool for the children. that help to keep their feathered friends safe and warm through the cold winter months.

We have great fun, and have got some fantastic ideas, like recycling these terracotta plant holders into cool birdhouses

Saw

Hammer

cordless Drill

Strightedge ruler

Good selection of exterior grade nails/screws

and some felted protection for the lid or we usually ask for the kids to bring in otherwise wasted inner tubes from their bike wheels

Dimmensions of the Holes for a Birdhouse

what size does the birdhouse hole need to be?

If you are trying to attract different types of Birds to your garden, then you can consider making the entrance holes to these dimensions. this means that if you choose to make the entrance smaller this will only house the smaller birds as they can only fit through.

Basic Dimensions for Birds

25 mm for coal, marsh and blue tits

28 mm for great tits and tree sparrows

32 mm for nuthatches and house

A starling sparrows box needs to be 25-30% large with an entrance 45 mm across.

Building a Birdhouse - some dos' and dont's

  • make sure the wood you use is at least 2cm thick, this helps with insulation and warping or splitting of the wood
  • With the excpetion of the entrance hole the other dimensions are only a guide
  • Birds do not like wobbly boxes, so make sure yours is securely affixed to the tree, fence
  • Position of the birdhouse needs to be carefully thought of. Make sure it is not too exposed to the elements, ie. the entrance not in the wind, or facing upwards, so rain could get in

Height generally 2 meters to meters in height off ground level, thinking about predators who could access it (cats etc)

  • If making more than 1 box, make sure there is enough distance between each birdbox, usually 10 meters apart.

Birdbox or Birdhouse - I call it a Birdbox but others call it a bird house

....is it Birdbox or birdhouse?

We have a few bird feeders and a birdhouse, and I tell you, we have birds by the house at all times: cardinals, blue jays, humming birds, and quite a few other kinds of birds, not sure what they are. Also, our bunny lives outside, and he is very good about throwing his food out of the cage and sharing it with any takers, so that helps a lot :) Squirrels and birds love him!! :))

My husband spent a lot of time building one and he was so proud of it. About a week after he nailed it to a tree, lightening hit the tree and split the house in half.
