how to sew a double top stitched seam

This is a decorative seam which is great for adding a little extra interest to your project. It also has the added benefit of adding extra strength to your finished seam.

Steps to sew double top-stitched seam:

  1. Place fabric right sides together and sew 1.5cm (5/8”) in from the edge.
  2. Neaten the edges using your preferred method i.e. over-locker (as in sample shown) zig-zag stitch or pinking shears.
  3. Press open for a neat finish.
  4. Then stitch two rows of stitching 5mm (2/8”) either side of the first.

Note:
By using a contrasting or complimentary colour thread this seam can be used for decoration.
