The Middle Passage Art Exhibit

Chained And Bound- This depicts two slaves in the hold of a ship bound for America. These slaves often had to endure deplorable living conditions and hardships while chained to one another awaiting their fates.

Escape-Many preferred to take their chances in shark-infested waters rather than endure the journey across the sea in chains. Many of these were lost at sea. The Middle Passage, as it came to be known, was in essence our holocaust.

Precious Cargo-I think this picture says it all. Nothing I could offer here can say it any better.

Rest For The Weary- This is the despicable manner in which the slaves had to sleep while chained to one another on a cold, dank floor. With the unsanitary conditions they were subjected too, it was not uncommon for slaves to die from diseases.

Mutiny-One famous mutiny took place on the ship The Amistead. Joseph Cinque masterminded this slave revolt and took over the ship. A famous court case resulted with the result of Cinque and his fellow slaves being freed and sent back to Africa.

The Lucky Ones-Sad as it may seem, the ones that died from disease or other tragedies and were thrown overboard may have been the lucky ones. They were able to escape the cruel fate that awaited them upon arriving in the new land.

Slave Ship Captain- Men like this were captains of ships that brought the slaves to America and other countries who profited from the slave trade.Yet the expression on his face is devoid of any sign of remorse.

These pictures are part of a series entitled "The Middle Passage." It is an exhibit of my work depicting the Atlantic Slave Trade. I am doing this to commemorate Black History Month. I hope you all enjoy and feel free to leave comments.

Sadly, today this type of thing still is taking place every day. Slavery may be the greatest crime ever committed against humanity. In the interest of fairness, I want to note that there is not a race of people on the earth today that at some time or another in their history has not enslaved and/or exploited another race for their own profit. So in a sense it is time for us all to "get over it" and admit we've all got blood on our hands. Once we admit that, we can go forward with healing these old wounds and work together toward a greater future for all of humanity. Unfortunately, that task will never be accomplished until Jesus Christ himself is seated at the head of the conference table.
