Mister Maker Craft Kit - Reviewing the Doodle Drawers

Updated on January 15, 2014

If your little one loves watching Mister Maker and his amazing crafty creations, then a Mister Maker craft kit in the shape of the Doodle Drawers is probably a must-have on their wishlist! But is the kit any good?

For those of you not in the know, Mister Maker is a CBeebies arts and crafts show for preschoolers in the UK. Each show features a main craft, a one-minute make, and other creative ideas. There are several Mister Maker kits available but this is the main one.

This was the first Mister Maker kit I bought for my daughter and I wasn't disappointed. It comes with a wealth of materials for crafting, including tissue paper, pipe cleaners, googley eyes, pom poms, lolly sticks, card, foam shapes and letters, glue and lots more. The glue stick provided is great, it sticks as good (if not better) than the well known kids glue stick brands, and my little girl loves the fact that Mister Maker is pictured on it! Everything is contained in a cardboard drawer, which can be customised to look like the Doodle Drawers by sticking on the supplied doodle drawer sticker sheet - this was a big hit!

The kit also comes with a Mister Maker project - ours came with instructions and supplies to make a concertina sausage dog (see below). It was a fast and fun craft and my daughter still gets the dog out to play with (so much so that we've had to replace the googley eyes a couple of times!)

This makes a super starter kit for toddlers and preschoolers who are beginning to explore crafting, as it includes most of the basics you need. Fans of Mister Maker will be happy as it includes the staples of many of the show's crafts (namely googley eyes and coloured pipe cleaners!), allowing the child to make projects from the show or simply have fun being creative with their own ideas.

I now leave this box out all the time for my daughter (who is now 4) to help herself to. She has had the kit for over a year and there are still items in there to be used, plus we have added more to it over time. The box may only be cardboard but it is sturdy enough to use over and over as craft storage, and it's lovely when my daughter delves in of her own accord and surprises me with a picture or present that she has made all of her own creation!

So, if you have a Mister Maker fan on your hands, or you simply want a great craft kit for 2-4 year olds to get creative with, then this is definitely a set that I would happily recommend.

My son is too old for all this lovely stuff. He used to watch something called Paintaway, which was very similar and I have great memories of glue and paints all over the kitchen. Although we're making collages at the moment for a school project - so perhaps he isn't ready to 'let go' just yet! Thanks for sharing.
