Nikon D3100: From Snapshots To Great Shots

Updated on August 29, 2017

My Review of Nikon D3100: From Snapshots To Great Shots

I bought the book Nikon D3100: From Snapshots To Great Shots to go with my Nikon D3100 camera and help me to learn to use it. I am new to SLR cameras and this book seemed like a good supplement to have.

One thing he will recommend you do is to set your image size to the biggest size. He writes that quality is more important than quantity, besides at the biggest size you can still fit 550 pictures on a 4 GB card. I bought an 8 GB card so for me that is about 1100 pictures.

What this book helps you with

With Nikon D3100: From Snapshots to Great Shots, you'll learn not only what makes a great shot work-you'll learn how to get that shot using your D3100. And once you've got the shot, show it off! Join the book's Flickr group, share your photos, and discuss how you use your D3100 at: flickr.com/groups/nikond3100fromsnapshotstogreatshots. I'll put pictures below that you can view as will as a clickable link to this group's page.

  • Learn the top ten things you need to know about shooting with the D3100
  • Use the D3100's automatic scene modes to get better shots right away
  • Move on to the professional modes, where you have full control over the look and feel of your images
  • Master the photographic basics of composition, focus, depth of field, and much more
  • Learn all the best tricks and techniques for getting great action shots, landscapes, and portraits
  • Find out how to get great shots in low light
  • Fully grasp all the concepts and techniques as you go, with assignments at the end of every chapter

Exposure: From Snapshots to Great Shots

Now that you've bought an amazing new DSLR, you need a book that goes beyond the camera manual to teach you how to take great shots, and that begins with understanding the fundamental principles of great photography. With Exposure: From Snapshots to Great Shots, popular photographer Jeff Revell starts with the basics of light, including how it works, and how to see it. In order to leverage this new understanding of light in your photography, Jeff walks the reader through one of the most important photographic principles--the exposure triangle: ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture. Learning to apply these three elements together is the gateway to both technical and creative control of your photography. The book covers all key camera features that affect exposure (regardless of what type of DSLR you have) including aperture priority mode, shutter priority mode, and exposure compensation. Throughout the course of the book, the reader will gain an understanding of exposure for many different situations, such as taking portraits, action shots, landscapes, and more. Beautifully illustrated with large, vibrant photos, this book teaches you how to take control of your photography to get the image you want every time you pick up the camera.

I have this camera and it did take a while to become used to all the features. I think if you do not learn about all the different features then there is no point getting such a good camera. Reading a book and practising are both very good ideas.

I am even more intrigued by this camera now. I guess I need the book too :) Thank you for the introduction to both the camera and the book. I still wonder if my photos would be as beautiful as yours even with the same equipment.

Well, my friend I should have my Nikon (Monday or Tuesday) of this coming week. Since it is my Birthday Week, my husband got it for me (like he was going to do at Christmas but I refused it). Being at 123RF- I have learned so much through the many rejections, it actually gave me a shove to learn more and want to do more with my photography. I just ordered this book also-so thank you for writing this page!

Nikon was always my favorite. I had two when I left military service but were stolen shortly thereafter and I have never replaced them.
