Photostrips and Photobooths

Updated on November 30, 2014

Vintage Photostrips

Once up on a time photobooths could be found in amusement parks, arcades, train stations, and on main street stores around the world. Several generations in the 1900s grew up with the photobooth as a primary method of recording special events. While they can still be found in amusement parks and arcades - they no longer hold the special unique appeal. With cell phone cameras, disposable cameras and the full range of digital technology photobooths have less of a role.

However, there are many online tools that let you take your digital photos and create the photostrips that were once only obtainable in a photobooth. Try out some of these tools and add some vintage appeal to your digital photos. You can use existing digital images, webcam images and have tons of photo fun!

Create vintage photo booth strips from your digital photos. Four poses! Your photos are automatically aged for an authentic vintage look. For the best results, they suggest you use really bad photos. You know, ones where your hair is doing something it shouldn't and the flash is going off right in somebody's face and one eye is closed and your mouth is open. Something awkward like that.

The Photomaton is Invented

Photo Booth debuts in 1925

Anatol M. Josepho invented the photo booth ("Photomaton") in 1925. Anatol was a world traveler having been born in Siberia in 1894. From there he went to Berlin, Germany at the age of 15, New York at 18, and then Shanghai, China in his mid-twenties. His "Photomaton" debuted in September, 1925 at 1659 Broadway, between 51st and 52nd Streets in Manhattan, and charged 25¢ for a strip of eight photos, developed in eight minutes. Records say that as many as 7,500 people a day would line up to have their photos taken - as reported by Näkki Goranin in The Telegraph. A white-gloved attendant would guide people to the booth and, once inside, direct them to 'look to the right, look to the left, look at the camera.' That's a far cry from today's far less formal photo booths!

Once upon a time photobooths were only found in arcades, amusement parks and retail establishments. However, as we all know they have lost their home in many of those places. However, a new age has brought the photobooth to parties, weddings, proms, corporate events and any other place where people are celebrating, perhaps drinking, and looking to be a bit silly while recording the event for posterity. Party Booths has emerged as the largest and most distinguished provider of photo booth rental services in the US.

@CraftyandClever: With most of these services I have found that the photo upload is what takes the longest and that really depends on two things. First the speed of your Internet connection. Second where you photos are - all on one PC in folders, on an online service or all over the place. Once you get the photos into the Mosaic it is no time at all - all the work is in the photo gathering and uploading.

I got my free one and then I ordered one. For two fifty it includes the photostrip, a card and the postage. If I mail a Hallmark card to somebody it's that much - without the fun personalization!
