History of Purple
The name purple and and the colour purple comes from a dye that's extracted from a mollusc .. who would have thought purple originated from a seashell!
Hundreds and thousands of these sea shells are crushed to make the dye which is called Tyrian as it originated from Tyre in Lebanon.
This purple dye is worth more than its weight in gold as you need to crush thousands of shells to get a small quantity so it became a symbol of royalty, wealth and power as only the richest people could afford it.

Warning Poem by Jenny Joseph
Warning by Jenny Joseph
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple

The Purple Cow by Gelett Burgess
I never saw a Purple Cow,
I never hope to see one;
But I can tell you, anyhow,
I'd rather see than be one.

Purple Sunsets
Why does the sky turn purple in the evening?
In the late 1800's Lord John Rayleigh (an English Physicist) worked out why the sky was blue in the day and changed colour in the evening.
He discovered the sky in the day is blue because the light from the sun is scattered by gasses, air molecules, water drops and dust that are in the atmosphere and the shorter wavelengths are towards the blue end of the spectrum.
In the evening the sun is a lot further away and the light rays from the sun have to travel a lot further before they reach you.
This distance increases the effect of Rayleigh scattering and the wavelength are longer so you lose the blues from the spectrum, leaving you with yellows, reds and purple.
