Scrapbook Binder: Helping You Hold It All Together

A scrapbook binder is like the wrapping on a Christmas present; while it's what's inside that's most important, a beautiful, colorful or funny scrapbook binder sets the mood for what's to follow in the same way a beautifully wrapped gift sets the tone for the fun to come. No one knows for sure the number of hobbyists in the US and around the world, but it is thought to number in the millions. This lens will tell a bit about the history of this most personal of pastimes, as well as provide links to funny and/or unique designer scrapbook binders on a variety of subjects which may be of interest to scrapbookers.

A Brief History

Scrapbooking seems to have its genesis in the 15th Century with the advent of affordable and plentiful paper. In England, each respective "commonplace book" reflected the unique interests of the person compiling it. A commonplace book would typically contain poems, recipes, letters, quotes or thoughts of the compiler. But most of these were put together by the literate upper classes who had the means to allow time for such pastimes.

In later centuries, and with the invention of photography, and especially of the Kodak Brownie in the early 1900s, scrapbooking was brought within reach of the masses. According to Wikipedia, Marielen Christensen is often credited with the revivial of interest in modern scrapbooking. In 1980, she was invited by the organizers of the World Conference of Records held in Salt Lake City, to display some fifty of her bound volumes containing primarily family photos.

It is estimated that today, one in every four families has at least one member who is engaged in this interesting hobby, and while scrapbooking is a relatively inexpensive hobby, sales related to the scrapbooking industry are said to now be in the billiions (with a "B") of dollars.
