The Watercolor Paints Which Brought Out My Passion

Updated on October 15, 2013

Grumbacher Academy Watercolor Paints changed the way I viewed painting with watercolors. Before being introduced to them I thought of watercolor paints as strictly those circles of hard paint crammed into a plastic case required for grade school art courses. Those paints typically lasted an hour or two before becoming a murky mess of colors. Not so with the Academy Watercolor Paints.

Every watercolor paint comes in a tightly-capped tube allowing for easy control over how much paint is required and where to place it on one's palette. Do not worry if you are new to watercolor and have yet to purchase your first palette. This Set of 12 comes complete with a ready-to-use plastic palette. Each set also comes with a flat wash brush and watercolor instruction booklet. To put it simply: you have not merely purchased a set of paints; you now own everything you need to truly begin painting.*

Now. Take a look at the module below. Every painting has been done by me. I am not talented nor do I pretend to be. I simply have a passion for watercolor. Grumbacher Academy Watercolor paints are what brought out my passion to paint what I love.

Academy's Alizarin Crimson, Green Viridian, and Thalo Blue have become more than tubes of paint. Their crisp fresh colors stopped all my childhood watercolor fears. I could mix to my heart's content and never worry about ending up with a wasted box of colors. Once I saw how easy this truly was I had a break-through. I wanted to use color to create paintings which were fanciful. When it came to my watercolors, reality was optional. No more landscapes. No more true-to-life flowers. Watercolors with names like Alizarin Crimson and Cadmium yellow should be expressed through my love for color. If I wanted hair in Ultramarine Blue with highlights of Thalo Blue and Green Viridian then so be it. Painting should be about passion and at the heart of mine would be color.

If you are looking to add color to your own art, thinking about giving watercolor a try, or looking to help someone start a passion of their own then I recommend Grumbacher Academy Watercolor Paint Set of 12 Colors. They not only give you beautiful color choices but also include a palette and flat wash brush to help you on your artistic journey. Purchase a watercolor pad, like the one below, and get started on unleashing your own passion.

*The set does not include watercolor paper. I have recommended my favorite pick for watercolor paper below.

Yuuko is my favorite of all manga characters to paint. I love her beauty. This is my first work where I truly chose the colors. Working at a power plant makes painting yellow perch quite creative.I finally stopped painting what everyone thought I should and painted what I wanted. She is the manga girl who started it all.My latest painting. Notice how I have improved in details like expressing movement in soft shadows over hard lines in her dress. My friend loves Sailor Moon and asked me to paint a picture of her childhood hero. She was ecstatic over the results.Alice of the Abyss was painted as a gift to a cousin for her room. The colors are done to compliment her decoration decisions.

Having the proper paper is key to creating a great watercolor. You want paper of at least 140 lb weight. For beginner's I recommend choosing cold press for mastering your first techniques. I have found a harmony of the two in Strathmore Watercolor Cold Press paper. I love their paper so much I own multiple pads in several sizes.

Strathmore 400 Series Watercolor Pad, Cold Press, 18"x24" Wire Bound, 12 Sheets

Strathmore is my choice in watercolor pads. Cold press is my choice as it works well for mastering watercolor techniques. I also recommend getting 140 lb paper for your watercolor work like the Strathmore shown here.

Academy paints are very affordable which means you can splurge and purchase a favorite or two. I using this Thalo Purple and definitely recommend adding it to your watercolor collection.

" I am not talented nor do I pretend to be." Pshaw!! You definitely ARE talented. Your work is beautiful. I'm not an artist, but it seems to me that watercolors must be the hardest type of medium to work with because I see far fewer well-known artists using it. (And I've seen some amateur watercolors that were just downright bad!)

I just bought this exact set for my cousin's teen daughter - you really can't go wrong with Grumbacher and the paint in tubes makes all the difference. (Who invented those silly hard-cake watercolours, anyway? This is so much better, even for a beginner.)

@angelatvs: I never ever thought watercolor would be more than a one semester course. Getting sick and finally appreciating the simple things in life, like the colors around us, brought out the painter in me. Give it a try and you might just fall for it like I did!

@hovirag: Thank you! It's wonderful to know others see beauty in this style. I love the art my family loves as well but they will never understand my style nor what i paint. Hearing others see the beauty in it makes me feel inspired to keep on painting.

@sousababy: I'm so glad you understand the importance of tightly-capped tubes. They made the incredible difference in my paintings. I highly recommend Grumbacher Academy Watercolor Paint because the colors are so rich. I never imagined watercolor paints could look as rich as oil ones.

I'll never underestimate the value of tightly-capped tubes. My former tube paints were a mess when I unpacked them (I'm not much of an artist, though). The Grumbacher Academy Watercolor Paint Set colors look rich - esp. for watercolors. Thanks for sharing this set with us.
