Having the proper paper is key to creating a great watercolor. You want paper of at least 140 lb weight. For beginner's I recommend choosing cold press for mastering your first techniques. I have found a harmony of the two in Strathmore Watercolor Cold Press paper. I love their paper so much I own multiple pads in several sizes.
