Thimble Crafts

Updated on August 1, 2013

Crafting with Thimbles to Make a Tiny Treasure

The thimble crafts I'm highlighting here are crafts that use thimbles, not crafts made with the aid of a thimble.

Thimbles generally are used as sewing tools to protect fingers during hand sewing. But thimbles are small, cute, and should be used for all sorts of crafty things, I think.

This tiny flowerpot shown here will fit perfectly in a doll house. Be sure to check out the links to the thimble necklaces, too!

I've also included some clip art of thimbles to use in crafting. Use some of these thimbles to decorate your sewing room, craft boxes, or sewing baskets.

Thimbles for Crafting - Start with Thimbles

Thimbles come in an assortment of designs. There are the practical silver ones that are used for sewing. There are so many colorful decorative thimbles. It depends on your project which ones you'll want to use.

Use this Handi-Tak inside the thimbles to stick the flower stems in. It works great!

Bead Around Thimbles - Make Thimble Catchers

If you like fine work, consider bead stitching (or sewing with beads using needle and thread) around thimbles to create whimsical works of art.

The cover of the pattern and instruction book shows a darling ladybug and lighthouse made by stitching beads around thimbles. How cute.

Make Crafts with Thimble Graphics

Thimbles are iconic sewing tools. The sewing-related clip art images available at The Graphics Fairy (see the links below) will let you decorate all sorts of objects.

Use these thimbles and other sewing graphics to embellish the following:

~ invitations to a quilting bee or craft night

~ decoupage onto a craft tray (I use trays to put everything I need in one place and work from while sitting on the couch)

~ print a full-size sheet of images and use to wrap small gift boxes

~ cover craft and sewing boxes and baskets

Also, WOF for handles might just read 36 for beginners but it came out really nice. I'll see if I can post it or if you want me to, just let me know.

I have a special heirloom thimble, but I didn't know you could make so many crafts with them.

My brother made novelty thimbles for 30 years. They included all kinds of animals, musicians, santas, halloween and so much more. He designed 4 new thimbles every month for the Thimble Guild od Scotland. Some are still on their siye. He called himself Bryn the Thimble.

As a joke, I started a thimble collection for a good friend. She ended up with some pretty interesting (aka old!) thimbles.

I like the idea of making a dollhouse bouquet with a thimble and some beads.
