Weird Stuff I Love

Updated on September 8, 2014

Weird Stuff # 1 Tiki for Meeeeeee!

Weird stuff! I desperately want a giant tiki for our backyard to sit under the banana plants and papaya trees. I'd put a tiki in the front yard, but people would covet it and eventually someone would steal it and probably have bad karma for the rest of their lives. I always think I couldn't live with that weighing on my mind, but maybe someday (soon I hope) I'll have to take that chance.

For now, I suppose the other weird stuff in my life will just have to suffice.

The remainder of the weird stuff on this page is shoved somewhere in our tiny home. Kids are grown now though and the hubs just lets me go full out weird stuff if I want. As long as he has his four favorite surfboards stored securely on the walls inside, he is happy. Yep, I'm a lucky gal and he's a very patient man.

Weird Stuff # 2 My Dancing Bananas

The artist is Greg Brown and the print is called Banana Appeal. I've had it for years and toted it from one house to another. The glass broke during one of the moves, and the print is a little beat up by now, but I don't care.

I think it adds even more character and history to my cherished art work and it will always hang in my kitchen. Notice the little cherry peaking out behind the pie? Awesome, huh?

P.S. Want one of your own? See below.....

Weird Stuff # 3 (my Giant Toothbrush)

I have a really big toothbrush just leaning against the wall in our bathroom. It was another eBay find. It has no business being there, but I haven't the heart to give it away. Honestly, I just don't know anyone personally who would cherish this toothbrush like I do.

Weird Stuff #4 Lighted Vintage Bra Display Lamp

Okay, okay.... I admit we call it a boob lamp.

My sister in law who knows weird pretty well herself, gave me this boob lamp many moons ago. While my kids were in college they borrowed it for their own weird d├ęcor, but I got it back several years ago.

When we use this at night, we don't have to worry about stumbling in the dark; it's a great night light. It's just too big to plug into the wall outlet.

Weird Stuff # 5 Burlwood Clock

Weird Stuff that Works

Weird stuff like this fully operational vintage burlwood clock makes me feel right at home. I won this time machine on eBay and it's one of my favorite finds so far.

Tick Tock Tick Tock Tick Tock .......I grew up to the sound of clocks ticking at night. To me it's a soothing noise.

I think the weirest stuff I have seen is right here in your lens - that toothbrush and boob lamp. I love the dancing bananas too. You do have strange taste, but it's a lot of fun.

Not a collector, myself, but one doesn't have to be to appreciate your stuff. I like banana couple! I inherited a longlife tiki some years back and, as my Zazzle profile proclaims, I am 107. So, it appears to be working.

I hadn't really thought about it. I guess weird is in the eye of the beholder. Could my treasures really be viewed by others as weird?! Okay -- I have to go look, now.

I driving in Pennsylvania on a scenic back road exploring for covered bridges when I ran across a pink toilet turned into a flower planter. Some things I have a hard time visioning in their "re-purposed state".

My mom worked for a few years in a plastics factory. Sometimes the plastic would ooze out of the mold in a weird way. These strange plastic extrusions decorated our porch like small sculptures. I'm sure the neighbors hated them.

    Weird Stuff #6 Bottlecap Gal

This lovely gal is made from recycled bottlecaps and wood. She was discovered by a fun online friend of mine who alas lives far away. Were it not for the fact I'd have to cross an ocean and several states to even get close enough to confiscating this bottlecap gal for myself, I'd have already added her to my weird stuff collection. As it is, I'll just have to be content to look at her picture from time to time. For now, that's enough. :)

Weird Stuff # 7 Vintage Mannequin Head & Torso

Sometimes I use this manneqin to display costume jewelry or funky hats. Usually though, she's just a conversation piece. Often people just stare.

The guests who "get it" inevitably ask me where I found it. And from one thrifter to another, that's all it takes for me to spill my guts.

Weird Stuff #9 Three Rice Paddle Puppets Walk Into a Sushi Bar...... (Get it? yuk, yuk)

We eat a lot of rice in Hawaii and I had extra rice paddles on hand. Felt, google eyes, hot glue and some sharpies took care of one hour of boredom for me.

I did end up donating these to the Hospital Thrift Shop and that's a good thing...I probably have enough weird stuff at home for the time being, don't you think?

Weird Stuff #10 Stuff I Covet Really Bad - Doll Heads Collection via Kevin at Hollywood Forever, Kevin

    Doll Heads Hollywood Forever Kevin
    Doll Heads Hollywood Forever Kevin

(Click on the picture to read how Kevin's collection got started.) Some may think the doll heads are kinda creepy (and perhaps they are right). On the other hand, maybe it's a little unsettling to some people (in a good way, if there is such a thing), because there are so many doll heads AND they're displayed in a vintage china cabinet? Actually, though, that's what makes it NOT creepy for me.

Anyone who has ever happened upon Kevin's blog and gazed upon the beautiful pictures he takes of old Hollywood cannot help but be charmed by what they see and read. It's literally like walking around the neighborhood and seeing through the eyes of someone who actually lives there. Check out his blog. I would love to see old Hollywood in person myself some day, but until then (or if I ever do) Kevin's blog is wonderful!

    Jack In The Box Portrait
    Jack In The Box Portrait

Weird Stuff #11 My Jack In The Box Portrait

    In a gilded frame!

One day I walked inside a Jack in the Box to order a burger and just happened to glance at the wall directly over the counter where I was standing and saw a portrait just like this one. For some strange reason I had to have one.

Once I got home, I checked the website and sure enough, I could order one for myself! The rest is weird stuff history in our household. It's not for every home, but it fits in perfectly here.

    Want one of your own?

It's been several years since I acquired my portrait, but here's how I did it. On the website, I clicked on contact us. There is a 1-800 phone number posted for inquiries, the address listed for customer service in San Diego accepts snail mail, OR you can click on the box PROVIDE FEEDBACK on the same page. Note the last method is the quickest and the one I used.

I inquired whether the portraits were available for sale to the general public. They were. I paid a flat fee ($60 back then) which also covered UPS shipping. The portrait is 18" wide x 22" tall and the frame is substantial; it's a heavier piece of artwork, so make sure you use a stud if you hang it up.

By the way, for the record....Jack doesn't get to come out every day, only on special occasions AND I've never worked at the franchise or personally known anyone who has.

    Tim Elliott's Monsters in Landscapes

Weird Stuff #12 Monsters in Landscapes Art

via Tim Elliott of Norman, Oklahoma

I first became aware of Tim Elliott's work through NY resident, Nicole, author of the blog, Thrift Store Confidential. Ever since I've been on the lookout for more information about this innovative artist who repurposes old pieces of thrift shop art in such a "weird stuff" way.

Don't you just love his style? It's incredibly drool worthy to me and someday I'd love to own an original, Monsters in Landscapes.

Weird Stuff #13 Bowling Ball Doorstop

Don't kick yourself for donating your old bowling ball to charity. Go buy it back!

And by the way, OMGosh, this is so easy to make, I won't insult you by telling you how I made it. I know you can figure it out for yourself.

Weird Stuff #14 Forked Up Art

My daughter knows me so well! She recently sent me this awesome guy to hold my salt and pepper shakers and napkins on the table. He's made of forks and spoons and he's called Forked Up Art. Isn't he just the cutest thing? Yep, he's part of the weird stuff that I love.

A tiki or totem pole is not too uncommon, at least around here but you do have a lot of other weird stuff on this page that is good. Love the dancing banana, always good for a laugh. The doll heads are just creepy.

Can't help but go with the prevailing thoughts, here. The doll heads are creepy -- maybe in a good way, as you suggested, veryirie, but they are wierd. That said your preathless anticipation for the strawberry chickens is a close second inthe weirdness category -- but in a charming way!
