Deer Crashes
Wildlife On The Road
100s of people are killed every few years as a direct result of them hitting deer while traveling the roads. So once we get past all the deaths then we can focus on the millions and millions in damages that are a direct result of hitting deer. Of course after death and millions in damages we have all the minor injuries and the damages that are never reported. So taking a look and thinking deer hits aren't a problem then you need to think again.
It really in many cases turns out to be a no brainer. When you know there are deer in the areas you are driving in then maybe you should slow down. You never want to become one of those numbers so it is very important to do a little homework and know when and where those pesky deer are going to be most active. The sooner you take the time to learn the sooner you stand a chance of not hitting deer in deer country.
As you read through the words below you will be introduced to a number of priceless tips to help you on your journeys. Just by reading this hub many people could save a lot of money with the knowledge I am sharing.
1. Of course the deer will be all over the place at all times of the year the summer and spring time is when you will notice them to be on the move more then any other time. The grass in the ditches is usually pretty long and that's where they love to eat. Deer are always on the lookout for luscious green plants and in the ditches is where they will be found. They will always be around because they are always doing one of two things. Either they are recovering from a long winter or getting ready for a long winter. One other season where a lot of strength is needed is breeding season. So just know deer are always feeding so you need to be always watching for them.
2. In the hours when the light is low such as dusk and dawn are very crucial hours for deer being on the move. The worst part about this is that dusk and dawn are when about 90 percent of people are either driving to or from work. Then we move into night and toatal darkness. Just to let you know it gets even harder when you cant see any deer until its too late.
3. While driving down the country roads their isn't a lot of work for error. You need to be paying constant attention to both sides of the roads at all times. The reason you need to pay such close attention is because you will need to be able to make quick decisions. Then you have the roads that run through forests or treed areas. Now you need to be watching the ditches and paying attention to what may come running out of the trees. No matter how you spell things out you wont be allowed much time to react.
4. Of course you can watch for signs that tell you there are deer crossing in the area. Personally I hate these signs because too many people don't understand that deer are every where and not just where the signs are. Just remember to always be on the look out in deer country.
5. Anytime you see one deer there is a very high possibility there are more in the area. It is very wise to believe that where there is one there are more. Almost all times this will prove to be true. If you can see them that's a good thing. Its the one that you cant see that you need to be scared of.
6. Whenever possible when driving at night you do really want to use your high beams. The bright lights will bring the deers eyes into sight and make them much easier to spot at night. I guess you don't need to be a rocket scientist to understand that when and if you see the eyes it is a sure sign that it is time to slow down.
7. While visiting deer country you don't have to drive as fast as the limit is. It really is okay to slow down and stand a better chance of avoiding the deer crash. Of course different aspects like weather and time of day can also help you better adjust your speeds.
8. It really is important to be well rested when making your way through areas with deer in them. The problem is you can rarely predict what a deer may do and it gets even worse as soon as you introduce fear. There isn't a lot of room for error when it comes to driving through deer country.
9. For almost everyone that has to drive through land inhabited with deer for any certain amount of time your turn will come. You will find yourself moving your vehicle in order to miss a deer that has run in front of you. You do want to pay close attention and really missing a deer isnt worth losing your life over. You will need to make a quick decision but also make sure its not a hasty one. At the end of the day you can fix your vehicle but death is death. As long as you are the one to keep the control then at the end of the day on most occasions all will work out.
When it comes to this hub be sure to read it over and over. The more of these things that you remember will give you a better chance when it comes to avoiding the deer. When you finally get the chance to make your way through deer country you will be excited to think and use the advice that has been shared with you here.
