Build a hybrid Car

Updated on April 20, 2014

Build a hybrid car of your own.

What are your options and what do you need to build a hybrid car? The first thing you need to understand is what a hybrid vehicle is.

A hybrid vehicle is one which uses more than one power source. The most common interpretation refers to hybrid gas/diesel electric cars. Sometimes hybrid means more than one fuel source as seen in cars which use a combination of hydrogen and gasoline or diesel.

When you build your own hybrid vehicle you have several options. You can convert an existing automobile by either adding hydrogen on demand system to improve fuel efficiency or install a small gas or diesel engine in conjunction with batteries and electric motors.

Another option is to build your hybrid vehicle from a plan Hybrid car plans are available for several hundred dollars and provide all the information needed to procure the parts needed to build your hybrid vehicle from road to roof. Average cost of building a hybrid car varies depending upon the type of vehicle you build but the maximum is usually less than $25,000.

Converting an existing auto

To convert an existing car to hybrid gas/electric it is very important to choose as light a vehicle as is possible. This is because the addition of electric motors and storage batteries will make the end product very heavy and that affects performance.

Mother Earth News commissioned the construction of a hybrid electric car using a small Subaru body and chassis. This worked well producing fuel efficiencies of 60 MPG using only the diesel engine and up to 125 MPG using both diesel and electric engines.

Converting an existing car to gas or diesel hybrid is the most expensive and time /labor consuming method. Comparable fuel efficiencies may be obtained by installing hydrogen on demand system in an existing vehicle.

HHO Systems

Introduce hydrogen into your engine and it burns a lot leaner. Lean means higher fuel efficiencies and cleaner exhaust. You save money on gas or diesel because you use a lot less of it. One of the best hydrogen on demand systems is the Hydro Runner G3.

The system has been thoroughly tested and the company has the units under a two year unlimited mileage warranty. In tests using a Ford F350 pick up fuel efficiencies of 39MPG were achieved. This system works in all ICE engines.

Hydrogen Hybrid Technologies manufactures hydrogen on demand systems that are rated highly all over the world. Their hydrogen injection system provides substantial increase to fuel efficiency in all internal combustion engines. Other systems are available for self-install or can be installed on-site. Just be careful when choosing an HHO system because the gas mixture is explosive so it might be better to spend a little more for a system you can be sure is safe.

The Car of Tomorrow

You can have the car of tomorrow today. Just build it yourself. Hybrid vehicle technology has evolved rapidly and will continue to do so. Research by the major auto manufacturers is ongoing in the race for inexpensive, efficient cars of tomorrow. By building or converting your vehicle to a hybrid you can be part of that future.
