1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee with fuel problems?
My Jeep has an unusual problem. When I over fill the tank, it leaks. When I fill it till the first click from the gas pump, the Jeep smells like gas, but it doesn't leak. There's no difference in gas mileage or power. To me, this means a bad fuel pump gasket. According to the dealership service Dept. It's a cracked fuel pump, & will cost $679.00 to repair. To me, if the fuel pump was cracked, either the engine would run badly (if at all), or the pump would spray fuel when the engine is running. Is the dealer trying to shaft me? Or is there a flaw in my logic?
They may be right at the dealership. The fuel pump is located in the fuel tank and could leak if cracked.
I would be checking the filler tube that goes from the cap to the tank and filler overflow first though, as it may have become partially dislodged, and would help to explain why it smells when you fill it to the top.
