    Have you ever played with Erecter Sets?  Cranes are built much like the erector  pieces; they bolt apart into sections. the sections are loaded onto specialty flat-bed trailers ( using a smaller crane), and then a crew of other cranes hoist the sections into place, where skilled Crane Builders bolt them all back together, and then hoist them upright into place.

    I believe the are taken down and transported in pieces much like a ferris wheel at a traveling amusement park.
