What is the smartest way to get a used car? What is a decent price?
Craigslist is the best way to get a good deal. As for the price, It depends on how old the car is and what kind of car it is. If you just search on craigslist you should get a good idea of the price range.
Always remember to check customer reviews on the car you're buying so you don't get a lemon.
I would totally stay away from Craigslist as it is the biggest ripoff. I would look in your local paper and also check out your local used car dealers. Know what kind of vehicle you want and do some research. Look up on the internet Kelly Blue Book and find out the price of the car. This will give you the Base price of what it is worth if the vehicle is in perfect condition. If you go through a dealer ask for the Car Fax to see if the vehicle has ever been in an accident. Always ask the owner if the title is a Total Title meaning the vehicle is a total loss, because if it is a total loss you will not be able to get it insured. Inspect the vehicle inside and out and ask to have your own mechanic to look at it - you can not be turned down for this if you are go some place else. Be careful of OEM parts and bondo and make sure there is a VIN number and the VIN number matches all documents. Many vehicles sold are total losses and then are fixed up and resold especially after a hurricane or tornado. Even if there hasn't been a storm for a few years don't let that fool you. Check everything. Also have your mechanic check all fluid levels especially the oil to make sure the oil is not black, this indicates the oil has not been changed. Air filter should be clean as well.
