What is SEO?

"SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. SEO is the set of strategies aiming to enhance and improve the position of a website in the results on search sites."

SEO is the practice of improving and promoting a website in order to increase the number of visitors the site gain from search engines. When optimizing your blog for SEO, it helps you to get higher rankings on Google and of course, more traffic .

Do you Know How Google works?

Everybody know Google is a search engine. Google relies on a specific set of algorithm to make available the relevant search results. Google is paid by the advertisers for showing targeted ads on various webpages. That is why they want to provide a better experience for their users: ‘better experience’ here means relevance of search result and the quality of it. It is the backbone of Google's business. To ensure this, Google has created a lot of updates like Penguin, Panda and Hummingbird. All of these updates causes the higher quality content to appear on top.

How to get higher ranking in the search engines?

Now that we know about Google, the really important question is : How do you get a higher ranking in the search engines? The answer is simple. Create high quality content and provide a better user experience. It is simple, but not easy. People make many mistakes, which prevent them from achieving the top ranking on Google. So let's review the main mistakes that can prevent your blog from getting a higher ranking in search engines.

1) Do a proper research on keywords
Oh Please... Don’t start with this.. I know how to use them. But, most bloggers do wrong. Here's an example: you log in to Google AdWords and checks the keywords with a high number of searches . Find many keywords with high search volumes, and you may use them as your main keywords. But before choosing your keywords, you do not check their competition. You need to look at both the number of searches and competitors.
Pheww… This is the big deal?? I always check compettion while choosing keywors. Well, do you check who the competitors are? Even though the competition is low, if a site like Wikipedia is ranked on the first page, you can not beat it.
Solution: Think about the keyword, and then analyze the site that is on top of the search page. Check the Page rank, and authority of the main root domain, It the competitor is minor, then you can go on with that keyword

2)Do not ignore your old posts

Let's say your blog is old and contains a lot of posts. Are you sure that Google know about them? Even if Google knows, they may only appear on say, page 47 of the search results. Needless to say that these posts do not bring any traffic to your site. But the thing is, do not ignore old posts. They are a great opportunity to help you earn more money. They will also increase your site rank in Google's eyes, since you are proving that you have a lot of high quality content.
Solution: There are great ways to revive your old posts, you need to start linking to them in your new posts. This will make the Google robots re-index your previous post and can make the highest rating.

3) Optimze the layout of your blog for search engines
Say you have a striking layout that everybody loves. But what if Google can not understand anything on your blog because of your layout? A highly designed blog, ( I am not talking about fancy designs) simple and optimized for search engines can help you get a higher ranking in search engines. Its main goal is to make Google crawl your blog easily. Having a well designed blog that makes Google work easier is a must.
Solution: Look for a highly optimized layout. There are a number of large projects that are optimized for search engines. You can choose a layout, edit the logo and stuff and boom! You are done.

4) Write for readers. Not for search engines.
This is another big mistake that many new bloggers make. They write to please the search engines, and not for readers. They try to include keywords in an annoying way just to get a higher ranking. Such bloggers forget that they have to worry more about their readers! On a practical level, your readers are the ones that drive the entire business! People choose what to read and what to ignore. Not you nor google. However if your readers do not like your content, neither Google because Google knows that nobody likes your content! Oh My God! How?
Google check your bounce rate. If your bounce rate is high, then your content is immature.
Solution: Write your blog as if you are talking to your reader. Then try to optimize the post for the search engines.

5) Are you still using blackhat methods?
Blackhat methods refer to a set of tactics that try to "trick the system" instead of relying on high quality content and authorship. I have said before that Google cares a lot about its users. They release updates to make their robots smarter and provide its users the best results. So in a system that cares more and more about their users, why are you still using these blackhat methods?
Solution: Do not stuff your content with keywords (keyword stuffing), spinning articles or any other method to circumvent the Google Bot. Focus on your readers and get high quality links.

6)Do not ignore the title. Title is important.
The title tag is the title of your post that appears in the search results.
Ignoring it can really change your rankings in the search engines, knocking your site from number 1 to number 20. Yeah, that really matters . A title tag may be the title of your post, but remember: Google (along with most other search engines) does not display more than 70 characters in the search results page.
Solution: Create a short title, but attractive, that can make users click on your page. Remember to include the keyword in the title!

7) Lack of consistency and Maintenance
Yes, Google cares about the blog that update consistently. But that does not mean you should post daily. I do not suggest it unless you have a large audience. The important thing is to decide how often you will post, and adhere to that frequency until you are ready to increase - posting rapidly, whenever you feel it is essential for your audience or search engines.
Solution: Try posting weekly and then promote your post throughout the week. Try to keep this schedule. Publish at least two posts per month, if you can not write four.
