Background

I am sharing the speech I delivered during the 2017 Awarding of Terminal Operations Excellence of Petron Corporation. Our Team received several recogntions that night which includes, a Silver Award for Environmental Compliance Excellence, a 4 Star rating for Safety Program Excellence, and the prestigious Best Oil Terminal award.

It was an amazing opportunity to honor God for the blessings he gave to our Team and an opportunity also to inspire the other employees to continue working hard and to never give up on their dreams.

Truly, God was with us on our journey to the top. A year earlier, Nasipit Depot was given one of the lowest rating in 2015. However in 2016, milestones after milestones happened. Aside from the Company given awards, The Labor Mininstry of the Philippine Government awarded us with a Gold Award for Outstanding Compliance to Safety and Health Guidelines.

It is my hope that people who would read the speech would be inspired as well. Indeed, through Christ we can do all things!!!

The Speech

It was on January 25, 2016 that my Team and I reviewed the list of 2015 Total Operations Excellence Awardees. We look up to the winners in awe but heartbroken because Nasipit Depot was nowhere in the list.

After the heart ache, the challenge for us is to carry-on….to be pick up the laurel….to be victorious…But we are just little dreamers walking under the footsteps of giants.

As their leader , I silently asked myself, “How can we do it?”. Then I remember the words I said in a PETRONEWS interview, “ Always put the word of God in your heart and company policies in your mind”. We essentially went back to basic which is acknowledging that our employment is not an accident. God placed us here so that the work place will glorify Him through us.

I would like to share the 3 work place lesson the bible taught us through the Prophet Daniel. They key points can change our paradigm on how we see profession and faith:

1. When you are at work. stand out and make a difference. We stood out at work by choosing an excellent attitude. rise above the average in the work place...we stand out by contributing competent work.

2. When you are at work kneel down....pray about issues and people at work. Prayer releases power. When you are thrown into the lions’ den...look up...Be patient when you wait for God's help

3. When God delivers us give him the glory

There were so many challenges in 2015/2016 that made us doubt our efforts to win the race. But God is both the master of the boat we are in and the sea the boat is travelling over. A year ago we dreamed of having more than 1 star MFA rating. A year ago we dreamed of being a GOLD awardee in GKK Nationals. A year ago we dreamed of being number one. A year ago, I made the decision to put God in the work place.A year later here I am speaking on behalf of our Team, thanking our wonderful God for all this recognition.

A year from now another Terminal will be honored. We all deserve to be number 1. Even if it takes 30 years or more eventually all Terminal’s will be number one. But as we go through the ecstatic process of gathering recognition, let us not forget the basics: The reason why we are running the race in the work place? And that is to honor God and make disciples.

Thank you to Petron Management for supporting each Terminal; to Operations Management headed by Sir Rudy and Sir Roland; to Sir Arnel and Sir Elgo for the guidance; to Jed for all the support, patience, reminder, and guidance;to my seniors in Mindanao Operations for sharing your strengths for I have always felt that I was the weakest link; to Sir Pol and Kayer for inspiring us to really look at our processes closer to see the GAPS; to Ma’am Edith for the warmth and motherly guidance; to Sir Rene for always checking on us; to Sir Alex for the guidance and for helping me since 2008, and to all the other visitors/auditors to the Depot whose inputs helped us in transforming the workplace. Again, we give back this honor to God who put us all in this Team.
