Happy Boss's Day!

When is Bosses Day?

When is bosses’ day? If you’re an employee, it would behoove you not to forget October 16th. Whether you love your boss or wish space aliens would come down and forever take him or her away, you had better remember your fearless leader at least this one day out of the year.

Sure, you can give a card to express your undying devotion, but wouldn’t some kind of gift be more effective in letting your boss know how much you really appreciate him or her? Here are some popular ideas that are sure to be taken well.

1. Personalized Coffee Mug

What boss doesn’t walk around with a coffee cup? I’ve known many to have their secretaries keep them filled with fresh coffee all morning. If your boss isn’t into coffee, maybe it’s tea or even hot chocolate. Personalized mugs are fun and will remind your boss every time it’s used of that special employee (you!) Find a coffee cup with initials, a saying, or even a photo. You’re sure to go right with this gift.

Facts about Boss's Day

Fact #1: The title of this one day of recognition has many variations. The first listing in Wikipedia is actually "Boss's Day," indicating a day of honoring one's own boss. "Bosses Day" is also commonly used, although an apostrophe is also used and added, as in "Bosses' Day," indicating a day belonging to many bosses. Wikipedia even mentions Bawse Day (??) and "National Boss Day," a term which would eliminate the debate over the apostrophe. I prefer Bosses' Day, but I'm sprinkling the other versions around, too, to try them out.

Fact #2: Bosses' Day is always on October 16th, unless the 16th falls on a Saturday or Sunday. In that case, Bosses' Day is celebrated on that Friday or Monday, depending on which day falls closer to October 16th.

2. Food Baskets with a Theme

Food and bosses definitely go together. Believe me, I know. I’ve been a boss and an employee—and food is always welcome. Give the chocoholic (that’s me!) a basket full of different kinds of chocolates, and give the health nut a health food or fruity basket.

Don’t leave out the junk food basket or the meat basket for the not-so-health-conscious boss. Go even further in getting in your boss’s graces with the “You’re Appreciated” basket. Those are out there, too.

3. Flowers

Flowers are nice. Can’t we all agree on that? Whether your boss is male or female, he or she is sure to appreciate a fresh bouquet of colorful flowers to cheer up the office. Add a handwritten card to tell how much you appreciate your boss, and you’re sure to score some points with your taskmaster.

Special Interests

If you know your boss well enough to know his or her interests, a personal gift could be appropriate. Do those interests include fishing or golf? What about sports? Chess or word games? Cooking or other hobbies? If you know what your boss likes and have the time to look for that perfect personal gift, go for it! Just be careful that you get it right!

4. Executive Gifts

Check out gifts for the executive’s office or personal use. Choose an attractive business card case or a fancy personalized pen.

Consider a tray holder for the boss’s desk, or a fancy frame to house that picture of his family, child, or dog. If your boss has an ego, maybe it’s a picture or his or her own self.

5. Gag Gifts

Okay, so far I’ve mentioned gifts that are pretty popular and pretty safe. Gag gifts may not be. Still, it’s not such a risk if you know your boss and how he or she will react.

If your boss is attached to the iPhone, he or she may appreciate iPhone app refrigerator magnets. If coffee is the thing, a "tank up" coffee mug to fill or a toilet bowl coffee cup might be the answer. Golf gurus might like the "butt putt" golf game in the office. Those with a certain sense of humor might appreciate the body outlined murder ink notepads.

You have to know your boss and whether your gift will incite laughter or a pink slip. If you are so inclined to go for a gag gift, check out Funslurp deals, where you will find a wild assortment of them. These unique gifts are really fun to look at, if nothing else. Before you give a gag gift, though, make sure you know how the recipient will react—especially if it is your boss

LOL> Great idea, Gwyn! There's nothing like a mug to tell your boss how you feel, whether positive or negative. :-)

I have had so many really crappy bosses while working in South Africa that I would have cheerfully sent each of them a mug telling them so. I love the article and it has given me food for thought.

Wawa has four different managers at each store, so that means four different gifts! We share gifts on both Boss Day and their birthdays and even give sending-away gifts when they get transferred to another store! Normally, gag gifts are the best haha!

      Thanks for sharing this, Victoria!

Mark, that's funny. Love your sense of humor. Hey, your employees better know not to get you flowers, then. I know guys who do like them, though. Again, I guess ya just gotta know your boss. :-) Thanks for your input!

I did not know Fact #2. The last place I worked we got together and made brunch for our bosses. They appreciated home cooking. And we didn't get into the "my gift was better than yours" drama.

My boss got the gift of a lifetime when she hired me. :-)

Oh and by the way, this may not be politically correct to say but as a man there is no way I'm looking for a bouquet of flowers...boss or employee. :-)

Great hub. Bosses Day is an important but not often remembered holiday. I had one boss in particular who was just amazing and even though I no longer work for her, I still like to remember her on Bosses Day because she's had such a great impact on me.
