Emergency Procedures and First Aid
First Aid Rules
A first aider cannot give you medicines without authorisation. If you want to become a first aider ask your supervisor if you can take a first aid course. If you are not a first aider, do not treat injured people.
If you are working alone, you will be supplied with a small first aid kit. Emergency assembly points will be given at the site induction along with telephone numbers for emergencies. These should also be displayed on site notice boards.
The First Aid Box
A first aid kit should not contain pain killers. If a kit is empty or an item is missing, you should report it to the person who is in charge of it. It id the duty of your employer to provide first aid kits.
The first thing you should do if you find an injured person is to check that you are not in any danger.
General First Aid
If you get stomach pains, get someone to call the emergency services. If someone burns their hands, immerse them in cold water.
If somebody has fallen from a heaight, DO NOT MOVE THEM, tell them to stay where they are until medical help arrives. If someone has become unconscious send for the first aider or get other help. If a person has a splinter, get them to seek out the first aider for treatment.
If you suspect broken bones after a fall, do not move, send for medical assistance. Penetration injuries such as nails in the foot, should not be removed because the item will be preventing more blood loss, seek medical help.
Eye wash bottles will be provided by your employer and should be on sites where there is a risk of getting flying debris in the eye. If someone has grit in their eyes, the best thing to do is flush the eye out with clean water.
If a manhole has collapsed you should shout and warn others of the danger. If an injury has occurred with a live cable, turn the power off first, then seek medical help.

Safe Use Of Hazardous Substances
COSHH ( Control Of Substances Hazardous to Health ) regulations deal with the safe use of hazardous substances. A risk assessment will be carried out by your supervisor whom will inform you of any instructions and how to protect yourself.
If you are going to use a harmful substance, it is the responsibility of your employer to tell you what is in the COSHH assessment.
A COSHH assessemnt tells you a substance may be harmfull and how to protect yourself.
If you see this symbol you must take care because the contents can irritate your skin and harm your health. All chemical bottles should be labelled, if not, put it somewhere safe then report it. You can tell is a substance is hazardous by the label on the container.
If you need to get rid of any hazardous substances including oil, do so in accordance with site regulations.
Asbestos and asbestos related products are very harmful to your health. If you think you have found asbestos, STOP WORK, warn others, and report it immediately. Asbestos will not cause skin problems but can cause lung cancer and breathing difficulties.
Bitumen's, epoxy resins, and solvents will cause skin problems.

Safe voltage on a building site is 110 volts because it is less likely to kill you. The colour of the cable for 100 volts is yellow.
If you are using a 230 volt appliance, use a RCD ( Residual Current Device ) this will cut of the power if there is a fault. You check the RCD is working by pressing the test button.
When using extension cables, you should unroll the whole extension to prevent heat build up and check the wire for damage. If the extension needs to be run across an area used by vehicles, cover the wire with a protection ramp and place signs saying 'ramps ahead'.
If possible, protect an electric cable by running it above your head. Only work close to electric overhead power lines if the power supply is turned off.
Electrical Power Tools
You must be trained and competent to use electrical power tools on site. Always switch off and unplug any tools that require adjustment. You need to check any power tools before using them to check for damage.
If you see burn marks on an electrical tool, the chances are that the tool has an electrical fault. Do not use it and report it to the supervisor.
If a power tool stops working, switch off the power and look for signs of damage, do not let anyone else use it. Use rubber gloves to protect yourself from electric shocks and report any damage to any tool.
Battery powered tools will not give you an electric shock. If a cable has a cut in the outer cover, do not use it and report it to your supervisor. Never move electrical distribution boxes, the site supervisor will arrange this to happen.
If working in a water logged area, use air powered tools to avoid the risk of electrocution.
