Do You Dream of Being Your Own Boss? Six Ideas to Make It Reality

Updated on July 14, 2014

. “My biggest motivation? Just to keep challenging myself. I see life almost like one long University education that I never had — everyday I’m learning something new.” - Richard Branson

Skills That Pay the Bills

Who hasn't dreamt of being their own boss? Even though you may be content and satisfied with your current occupation, salary or supervisor, there is still a drive and willingness to take a risk. Do you want to challenge yourself? Do you want to work from home? Do you have the desire and enthusiasm to learn? Why do you want to be our own boss? Do you believe in yourself? Do you believe in your idea? Do you yearn to make your own choices? Do you like to make your own schedule? Are you self motivated and willing to learn from mistakes and failure? The most successful business people in the world are their own boss. Do you dream of being an entrepreneur? One of the greatest motivators for people who want to be their own boss is having complete and total control over their creative process. Are you a freelance writer or proofreader? Have you created a blog or website? Have you found a way to use your English skills or writing talents to bring in extra income? Was creative freedom a major factor in your goal of being a freelance writer?

. “One of the huge mistakes people make is that they try to force an interest on themselves. You don’t choose your passions; your passions choose you.” - Jeff Bezos

Show Others How It's Done

One of the most meaningful philosophical questions we ask ourselves during our lifetime is, "What is my purpose?" Even though this question is asked, it may never be answered or revealed to us in the way we anticipated. Every one of us has a special talent or skill. Even if you never graduated from a university or simply dropped out of college like billionaire philanthropist, Bill Gates, you will be successful if you surround yourself with positive, hard working, creative people. It may take years and years to discover your true vocation. When you do find what you are meant to do you will have the desire to pursue that dream with tenacity. You may even decide to share your skills and help motivate others. Do you dream of buying, starting or owning your business or franchise? Many motivational speakers and recreational instructors are successful entrepreneurs. They are conducting seminars or leading painting, yoga, or karate classes right now. Decide what service or activity you would like to perform and get started.

Rub People The Right Way

Massage and physical therapists have the opportunity to choose their clientele. They can either make the choice to work for a company or be independent contractors. Many customer service consultants can use their knowledge of business, sales and people to assist organizations reach their goals. If you have worked in customer service or just love working with people you already have a head start in creating your own consulting firm.

“Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” - Albert Einstein

What Do You Need?

Do you have a great knowledge of history, math or science? Are you patient and love instructing others? Do you play an instrument? How would you like to be a tutor? Tutor's can build a reputation quickly within a college, school or word of mouth from parents. Students who need private and personal instruction will benefit from your struggles and triumphs. Do you like to set your own price or schedule? Do you like to have weekends off and time for vacation? Not all of us were meant to be public or private school teachers but still have a desire to share our knowledge with others. There is great satisfaction knowing you assisted a child or adult with their own pursuit or goal. The choice is yours.

Lead the Way

Do you have a practical idea that may help people in your community such as dog walker or poop scooper? Yes, their is a great need for dog exercisers and dog poo sanitation. Are you a dog groomer? Surprisingly, these types of "menial" jobs are big business in the right area of the country. Do you have a talent for landscaping or gardening? Most people find that what they intended to be a part time endeavor quickly grows into a full time business. Often times their clientele expands allowing them to make a comfortable living from their profits.

“When you cease to dream you cease to live.” - Malcolm Forbes

Be Creative and Take a Leap of Faith

There is nothing we can imagine that we can't make reality. Be creative in your pursuit. Are you a photographer? Sell your photographs to stock websites. Do you love research? Use your skills to create your own genealogy or ancestry consulting service. Are you an excellent typist? Be a medical transcriptionist. Make no mistake, being an entrepreneur or owning your own business is not easy by any means. The hard work and sacrifice that goes into creating your dream never will be. You will have to make a choice of whether you would like to stay in a comfortable nine to five environment or take the risk of pursuing what you have always wanted in life. You will also have to face the day to battle with naysayers and negative thinkers. There are people who will give you a hundred reasons why you shouldn't challenge yourself or take a risk. Listen to their advice and continue your pursuits. Don't give them, show them a hundred reasons why you will be successful. There will be moments when you sincerely doubt your own abilities but this is normal and natural. You will have to pick yourself up off the floor and continue to be your own biggest cheerleader. So do you still want to be your own boss? If you can dream it, and are willing to work harder than you have ever worked in your life, you can do it!

. “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” - Albert Schweitzer

Any person who chooses there own path is an inspiration to me, kidcrafts. It is difficult and overwhelming at times to pursue your passions but as you mentioned you have found a way to stay positive and motivated. That is half the battle. Thank you for sharing your insightful comments.

I took the jump... and as you say it's not easy. I work long hours and it doesn't pay the bills yet.... but things are starting to move slowly in the right direction :-)

I try to stay positive and when I want to quit, I am always thinking of the tale "3 feet away from gold"... that's good enough for me to focus on work.

Thanks for sharing this provoking hub!

    Hi, Lisa!

Your Hub is awesome! I like articles and essays that motivate me, and this one did not let me down. In addition, you included a quotation by Richard Branson as well as an ad for one of his books. I'm putting in an interlibrary loan request for that book tonight. Finally, I love the quotation by Albert Schweitzer at the end. So true! Thank you for working hard and producing another compelling Hub, Lisa! Aloha!

Yes, would be my answer. Nice thought provoking hub, LK. I say a person isn't "living" without taking risks. Life is here once. Interesting quotes, too, that you incorporated. Lots of tenacity is required. Anything worth pursuing is worth the sacrifice. And, you know, you just don't know until you try and later look back with no regrets. Thanks for this.
