Free SEO Training Courses

Updated on April 12, 2015

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the step-by-step process you can follow to try to attract the most natural, organic traffic to your website, or webpage.

You can learn SEO easily, even for free, from the Internet, a formal training course or books - and there are even University degree modules that teach SEO as it is a legitimate business marketing activity.

When people use a search engine (Google, Bing, Yahoo) to find things for them online, they get presented with a list of results - the websites that appear at the top of these results are the ones who will receive the most free traffic to their website. To become one of these top listings is done by learning SEO techniques and applying them to your website.

When people talk of SEO, they usually intend to optimise their webpage and website to attract free traffic from Google. Google publishes the rules a webmaster should follow in order to get ranked highly and appear nearer to the #1 position in Google's results.

If your webpage/website appears in Google's #1 position for your chosen keywords, you've optimised that webpage for those keywords.

Check Your Google Position

The art of SEO relies on you following the step-by-step process, then seeing how Google ranks your webpage/website. If you're not number 1, then you can keep working on your SEO until you do become number 1 at Google.

Some keywords or keyphrases you may never dominate - you'll simply never have enough clout to become #1. But that doesn't mean you can't become numebr 1 for another keyword or keyphrase.

Everybody can become number 1 in Google for something! The trick is to get into the Top 3, or Top 10 Google results for keywords/key phrases that earn you the most money.

SEO and optimising your webpage is a moving target - but you can have as many shots as you like. It is important, therefore, that you know where you rank. Keep a note of your ranking and see how you can improve it over the weeks, months, years.

If you don't know where you rank now, or where you ranked last month, then you can't know that you've genuinely improved your site. Keeping these basic statistics is vital.

There is software available that can check this for you in just a few seconds and will keep your position noted for you.

Alternatively, use Google Webmaster Tools, which will show you your average positions for any given phrases.

Free SEO Training Courses

If you want to optimise your webpage or website, so you get to be in the Top 10 Google results for your chosen keywords, you can follow Google's free list of 'rules'. Most people think they need more than this - and will look for free SEO training courses that actually take them step-by-step through the whole process, along with checklists and exercises. In this way you know that what you are doing is right and you gain confidence in what you are doing.

Learning SEO is not difficult.

  • It is a simple step-by-step process you have to follow. There are some parts of SEO though which are harder, more time consuming, or you simply can't always achieve when you first start out.
  • Most people can have control over their website and can use h1 and h2 tags on their page - some cannot.
  • You DO have control over the keywords you choose to target to become #1 and in the keyword density.
  • You can choose how long you want to spend learning SEO and how long you want to spend optimising each page.
  • You can have some control over who links to your website, and how they link - which is an area that has recently changed since Google's latest update.
  • In short: You can learn SEO easily and there are lots of free SEO training courses out there that will teach you the skills you need.

Get SEO Qualifications:

However, beyond learning how to learn simple SEO, there are whole, well-paid, careers in SEO work. For this you might be considering getting formally qualified and to get SEO qualifications.

Many Universities can help you to get SEO qualifications. It is a legitimate industry and there is a shortage of skills in this area. If you are qualified in SEO, then you can not only apply for (and win) high-paying SEO jobs, but you could choose to start your own SEO consultancy, or simply use your SEO skills to earn yourself a full-time income without the need for clients at all.

Put simply: If you are fairly passtable at SEO you can make a full-time income from those skills by choosing a product to promote online and simply writing articles, driving traffic towards your chosen products. This is called affiliate marketing and uses a blend of good copywriting skills with SEO skills. If you are GOOD at SEO then his is an area you can really earn a high income from.

SEO is a growth industry, an inustry with a future - and a skill that enables you to be self-sufficient and not to have to rely on a "proper job" with an employer at all!
