Going Back To School After 50

Updated on May 8, 2011

They call it retread !

They say it's too late, you're too old,why would you go back to school at your age? I have heard that I'm too old, school is for young people. I was in the truck parts and service industry for twenty five years, working my way up to management, making good money, working lots of hours for my salary. One day the owner of the company that I worked for called me into his office, he was standing behind the desk, a sure sign that he was nervous, we are letting you go ! Really, they are letting me go, I'm fired.

This is something no one wants to hear, what am I going to do? I started my job search and interviewed, called, faxed resumes everywhere, nothing ! My wife said I should think about what I want to do, maybe go back to school. I am 52 years old, is it too late for starting over? My wife suggested Massage Therapy, I wonder why? So I started research on massage therapy and found it very interesting, I likes the Anatomy that I would study and the fact that I could work for myself, no more corporate jobs. It also meant I could help people feel better and the wellness was amazing, it's good for your health.

I only had one problem, I didn't graduate high School, you can't go to college without it. I found that I could take a GED coarse at the community college, free! So I signed up and had a high enough English score to take it on-line at my own pace. I finished in two months and enrolled in Massage School. Wow, most of the students were younger than my kids, I was the oldest in the class except for the teacher, he had a few years on me. I graduated with a 3.5 grade average and got my diploma, passed the national certification and got my state license.

I did it, I went back to school at 52 and changed my career, retread into something new like a breathe of fresh air, happy and working for myself. You can do it too, like me it's never too late!

I am 50 years old and have thought about changing my career. Being a massage therapist has come to mind, but I have always thought it's a little too late for my age. Your message has encouraged me to go with my plan. Thank you.

Good for you. And hey, there is nothing in this world like a good back massage. We need more people who know how to provide one.
