Wilhelmina, a sociologist, is into phenomena that affects the society and vice versa. Indeed, it is a two-way traffic.

What Is A Skill?

A skill is what you are an expert in. For instance, if you are good in writing, you will claim to have writing skills. In addition to that, there are different type of skills which can include, plumbing, tailoring, teaching, engineering and many others.

We all at some point came across the saying that education is the key to success. Come to think of it, yes it is but when pursued in a realistic manner. What do I mean when I say in a realistic manner?

When we grew up as children, our parents never asked us if we wanted to go to school but they took us whether we wanted to or not. Furthermore, we all had aspirations like being a doctor, a pilot or any other career ambition one wanted to be when he/she grew up. Right?

I do not know what education system you went through as you grew up but I hope it was a success for you as an individual. One thing I have realized is that most people go to school because their parents have asked them to do so. Furthermore, they pursue careers of their parent's choice and not theirs.

One thing that people fail to realize is that, you will go to school, get that education and still lack the relevant skills to handle any task. This is very unfortunate for any graduate.

Despite education being the key to success, it is very important to gain a skill out of it, for it to be truly a success.

Current Viewpoint On Education

Recently, people see gaining education as pointless. Why is that? This because people go to school only to get that certificate and be known as a degree or PHD holder not knowing what awaits them after school.

Yes, you will get that certificate, so what next? Can you imagine being a degree or PHD holder with nothing to offer?

Most people claim that education only tests your memory but i differ with such people. The reason behind my differing opinion is that as long as you know what you want in life you will realise education does more than testing one's memory.

Education gives you the right skills to apply in real life. If you are serious enough you will realize all that. On the contrary, some learn the necessary skills from their colleagues and not in universities or colleges.

Apparently, I remember learning poultry farming skills from a very close ally and research skills from the university. All in all, I am glad that they were both a success.

The Benefit Of Having A Skill

Prior, getting a degree was the norm, as time went by, the norm changed and it was all about connections, who do you know? Recently, it is all about what you can do or offer, for your to earn a living in the society.

The major thing about possessing a skill is that with or without getting employed, you are able to create a job opportunity for yourself. For instance, you are a graduate or a university drop out with an engineering skill, you have applied for several jobs and did not succeed in getting one or also you already have a job but you are in need of a side hustle to boost your income.

Generally, having a skill will benefit you in both ways, whether employed or unemployed. You might be employed in a certain company and still have a side hustle that puts your skills into reality.

Still on the engineering skill example, a person who is unemployed can decide to display his/her engineering skills in the streets using the social media platform or any other medium and create opportunities for oneself. On the other hand, the skills can also make you outstanding from the crowd and earn you an employment in any company of your choice.

Do you know your skill(s)?

Recommendation

One important thing to note when pursuing a degree, take some time to evaluate the course at hand. In addition to that, find out what skill you will gain from it as well keeping in mind its applicability in life for your survival.

There are many strategies that one can put into practice such as using YouTube to identify and gain a certain skill, but having a skill should be key in your life. Whether you intend to be employed, self-employed or have a side hustle, a skill is a prerequisite.
