Government jobs are the most preferred ones among youth in India. Even though private corporate offer heavy packages, government jobs offer you job satisfaction, employment security and respect in society. They also come with attractive pay scales. After 7th pay commission implementation, pay scales of govt. employees will shoot up to match pay scales of those in IT sector
In India, vacancies are offered for various positions in both Central and state government departments, and public sector units (PSU) like Banks, Railways, BSNL etc. The most prestigious jobs in the country are the All India services- IAS,IPS etc. The selection is conducted through the Civil Services Examination each year by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Apart from this, state governments conduct their own civil service examinations for various Gazetted and non-gazetted posts. Police selection ie, Constable, Sub-inspector etc is also done by the respective state governments.
Staff Selection Commission (SSC):
SSC conducts exams for various non-gazetted posts for various departments in central government. SSC may also conduct exams for the defence forces. The important posts are Sub inspector in CBI and other Central police organisations, Inspector of income Tax, Inspector of Posts, Junior Accountant, Assistants in various ministries and Section officers in various govt departments.
SSC offers jobs for various qualification levels- 10th, 12th, UG, PG, Engineering etc
UPSC:
Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is the most prestigious and apex recruiting agency of the country. Apart from selecting IAS, IFS, IPS etc, UPSC conducts exams for other Central services like Engineering Services, combined Medical Service Examination, Geologist examination, Central police forces examination, Special class Railway Apprentices examination etc. Most of the candidates appearing in UPSC exams will appear for other exams as well.
Banking Jobs- IBPS Exam
This agency conducts for recruiting Banking staff at various positions like Clerk, Probationary officer (PO), Manager, Technical officer etc. Posts in RBI and NABARD are also filled through IBPS examination.
Banking exams are mostly non-technical and requires only general aptitude & competence- mental ability, analytical reasoning, mathematical skills, English language skills etc. There is no need for specialized degrees.
With 3-6 months of preparation, one can easily qualify for banking exams
State Civil Services Examination
Like the central government jobs, each state govt recruits candidates for its state level posts. These are called as State civil services or provincial civil services(PCS). Various exams for police postings like Sub inspector, deputy superintendent of police, constable and administrative posts like Sub-collector, Revenue divisional officer(RDO), Revenue assistant etc are conducted by the respective public service commissions of state governments
Technical jobs like engineers, fire fighters, archaelogists etc are also filled through exams.
Some of the state public service commissions in India are UPPSC(Uttar pradesh public service commission), TNPSC (Tamilnadu public service commission), KPSC(Karnataka public service commission), PPSC (punjab public service commission) etc

NDA (National Defence Academy)/CDS (combined Defence services)
Both these examinations are conducted by UPSC twice in a year. Various posts in Military, Navy and Airforce are filled through these examinations.
Eligibility for NDA: You are eligible for NDA after 10+2 exam
Eligibility for CDS: You must be a graduate from a recognized university
Central Armed Police forces
These include Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Border Security Force (BSF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) etc. Important posts are Assistant commandant, Sub inspector etc
Technical/Engineering posts
There are lots of technical/engineering posts in public sector undertakings like Railways, BSNL, BHEL, SAIL, Metro Rail corporations etc. Candidates with B.E, M.E, B Tech, M Tech etc can apply for officer & senior grade posts
Railways
RRB (Railway Recruitment Board) conducts exams for different posts like TC (Ticket collector), Loco Pilot, Station Master, Signal engineer etc
BSNL
Posts like Engineer Apprentice, management Trainee, JTO, Jr Accounts Officer etc
Teaching/Research jobs
The top Exam conducted by the central government for Research/Scientific posts is CSIR-UGC JRF (junior research fellowship). Successful candidates get opportunity to do research in apex institutions and obtain research fellowships. They also get stipend from the government.
Ugc- Net
UGC- NET (National Eligibility test): This exam is to determine eligibility for college/university lecturership in India. Anyone who qualifies for JRF automatically qualifies for NET.
If you quality for UGC-NET, you can either choose a career in research or teaching. You will be paid an attractive stipend while also getting an opportunity to pursue research in premier research institutions in the country.
This examination is currently conducted twice a year. In future, govt is planning to conduct this exam only once a year.
