Nannying Overseas - Life As A Nanny

Updated on May 1, 2012

Working as a Nanny

Are you wanting to travel overseas and work as a nanny while there so you can explore London and the rest of Britain as well as Europe ?

A nanny job is a great way to make money and see the country as you can do weekend trips within Britain or Europe .

Often the family will require you to travel overseas with them like I went to verbier Switzerland for free with a family on holiday .

Even though you are working you can still have days out exploring with the children AND GET PAID TO TRAVEL !!

I lived back in Wales where I was born in 1997 and as I love children I decided that I would work as a nanny as I love children .

After a drive to England for an interview in the Cotswalds where we thought of living I was offered a nanny position out in the country from Chepstow looking after a little boy called George from the day after he was born as well as his big brother Henry .

I had done a lot of babysitting as well as run a creche at an Aquatic centre in NSW Australia so I had references to take with me overseas which you will need if you are after a position as a nanny.

After this position when Henry was at school & George was going to start at day care I realised there was a need for temp nannies around Britain & I worked at a few places including Inner London, Fullham and even France doing a few temp jobs.

How Many children can you handle ?

How I Found Nanny Jobs

I placed adverts in the English magazine The Lady as well as on Gumtree which worked for me.

A magazine called TNT used to come out every week free at local train stations which I would pick up as well.

There are nanny agencies in London however I found it easier getting work directly with the families.

Skills needed for Nanny work

You really need to have a love for children, enjoy being with the children & have plenty of patience as well as it is not a job just to earn money .

You must be prepared to provide a safe and healthy environment for someone Else's children ,showing them love so you can see nannying is more than a babysitting job where you might not see the children again .

Often the children will grow to love you as they spend more time with you than the parents so you need to be able to cope with that .

You often have to help with tutoring after school ,Teach a child good manners as they are often spoilt rotten so quite rude .

Cooking nutritious meals is a very important part of a nanny job.in an interview you will most likely be asked to describe meal plans and snacks to prospective employers that will provide their children with the vitamins and nutrients they need.

You also must care for sick and injured children should an incident arise so a current First Aid certificate is important.

A lot of these children crave love & attention as they don't get to spend a lot of time with their parents.

Make sure you have 3-4 current references that are contactable .

A current First Aid certificate

A sense of humour is very important !

Patience for humans and animals,

Kindness

Multitasking in the house .Be prepared  to do a few extra jobs like dishes, putting the rubbish bin out etc.

Keep in mind doing these extra jobs can land you a great reference & more nanny work in the future.

A lot of people are asking for formal qualifications these days as well as a police clearance.

Advantages of working as a Nanny

Often you get to be a live in nanny so you have nice accommodation & saves you money on rent.

If the family goes away you get a free holiday ! ( I got to go to Verbier in Switzerland !)

During the day you get to go to places you want to explore with the children .

I was paid to take a boy to the Millenium Dome in London ,

The London Eye,

France for a day trip

Swimming

A Train trip up north  to York , taking a boy to his relatives then I had 3 paid days off to visit friends until I collected him for the return trip home !

Have trips out shopping , to the park etc with the children ! Be paid to shop ! Have your zoo visit / Museum / boat ride paid for when you take the children !

Have Fun With the children !

The children love you playing with them !

Travel to Europe

On weekends and holidays take advantage of bus trips and cheap airfares while you are over in England  to cities in Europe as well as in Britain .

I enjoyed a weekend exploring  Dublin  , the quaint pubs , the famous bridges ,traveling up by bus and ferry.

Book your accomodation well in advance if you want to visit Dublin as it is a very popular destination for backpackers!

A day trip to Bruges was another trip I enjoyed by ferry.

What Do I Pay My Nanny ?

Many when wanting to hire a nanny ask the question "What do I pay my Nanny " ?

You will need to take into account their age & experience as you will pay a mature nanny who is willing to do extra jobs more than an 18 yr old who only takes care of the children with not a lot of experience.

Also it depends on whether it is a live in or live out position as well & what you offer with the package.

In Australia $20 an hour for live out positions is average .

In the Uk people are paying from 300 pound a week & up.

A nanny uniform would be the clothes the employer requires the nanny to wear (like a blouse and a skirt, or a blouse with some pants).

Not quite sure what you mean however I never wore a uniform as a nanny, wore my own comfortable modest tidy clothes . Nannies used to wear uniforms however I never saw a nanny anywhere from London - Sydney in one .

What would a nanny uniform look like anyway ?!!
