You must have observed that clergy men's head gear, cheerleaders socks, and graduation hats feature a playful puff that adds some pomp to the wear.
This tuft of clothing is known as pompom and has been in use for decades. This guide explores the origin, history and uses of pompoms in today's societies. Read on.
The Origin of the Term 'Pompom'
The term was derived from a French term 'pompon'. In the 18th century, the Hungarian cavalry- commonly known as Hussars- used to wear a tall cap as an identifying ornament.
The French army adopted and added a twist to the structured cap to suit their style. The French army renamed the new look cap pompom and started using it to signify a soldiers rank in the army.
Use of Pompoms in Contemporary Society.
1. Off the battle fields, pompons were used as indicators of their status in society. In Southern America, for instance, certain men and women were bestowed with colored pompons to signify their marital status.
2. Clergy men from Rome wore square-peaked caps to signify their order in church. These caps were popularly known as birettas.
3. Further down in Scotland, a pompom-or toorie- was part of every day's wear. The idea of cheerleaders wearing pompoms actually originated from Scotland as the girls wore those during school dances to woo fans.
