Updated on January 3, 2025

Why change your career at this point in life?

You may have a lot of experience in your present job and you are valued as an employee for your company but still you feel something is missing. Whether it is a new challenge or just boredom a new career in a new field might bring back the passion that has possibly gone with your present position. It certainly isn’t a decision to make lightly however the benefits from this major transition will probably end up being very rewarding.

Things to think about before making the move

Whenever you make a big change in life it seems that money somehow gets into the equation and it is no different with recareering. Most folks remember how much they made at the beginning of their working career, it wasn’t much. If your plan is to change careers you probably can expect to take a cut in pay at first, but this might not be a deal breaker for you because what you are ultimately doing isn’t about money, it is more about personal fulfillment. And if you are older and more settled financially it will seemingly make the change much easier.

Another aspect of a new employment field is learning new things and not being able to count on past experiences to help you through some situations. You will definitely be leaving your present comfort zone. Although there are some people skills that you have obtained through the years that you will be able to carry to just about any job.

Change, especially major change, can be challenging in most everyone’s life. Weighing the positives and negatives of change may help or it even might make things worse, it is hard to say. But one thing is for sure living with the regret of not attempting to do something that you always wanted to do can be a heavy burden to carry.

If you are unemployed or even if you are employed but looking for a new job take the time to research what exactly you want to do. Whether you think so or not you do have career options. You first need to develop a methodical plan that starts with you assessing your skills and your desires and eventually plotting a detailed plan on how to get that job.

What are the marketable skills that you possess is something that folks at times overlook. Whether you know it or not you probably have more skills than you think you do and it isn’t just technical skills. People and communication skills are sometimes just as important as anything else that you can do. Write down the list and don’t leave anything out.

Finding out exactly what you want to do in the way of a job and career can be frustrating and if you are an older worker than it probably is worse because you may think that you are too old to start in a different direction. Of course that’s false; it is never too late no matter what you age is to enter a new field. You probably have a few ideas of things that interest you. Now is the time to research those ideas and come up with a few more things that you might want to try.

One of the best places for information on careers is the government website Career info net. Click on the occupation that you are interested in and then click on occupation profile. After that you will choose the state that you want to live in. the occupational profile will cover everything from training to salaries. It will also offer quite a few links where you can find additional information.

Before making any determination on what you want to pursue, think about how long it takes to become trained and also what is the job market of this career in the near future. But probably the most important thing to think about is whether you want to do this type of job full time.
